Fell into this trap once but learned very quickly of this effect and never invested in a hot theme afterward. Don't even think about shorting these either the market already prices this effect in as well and will burn you through theta or squeeze you out before going lower again.

CNBC even has a regular sequence on ETFs. They never talk about closures, they only talk about new ETFs, especially the ones that pay them to talk about them

Oof learn it the hard way. I usually follow the value investing, Warren Buffet teachings and stuffs and profit quite comfortably. However, there was a period where I got super FOMO and try to follow the hot new things and got burned pretty badly. Switching back to what people consider boring and it works out pretty well for me.

Does that mean that shorting the portfolio in one of these ETFs would generally deliver positive real returns over the next five years?
