The problem with John Mearsheimer argument on this matter is that it insinuates nations do not possess the sovereignty to determine self rule and self determination. Just because Ukraine borders Russia does not mean that Ukraine has to automatically acquiesce to Russia and its security needs. If Ukraine wants to join Nato, that's their right as a sovereign nation. Russia needs to ask itself what are we doing wrong that our neighbors believes it needs to align with the west to feel secure.

So if Putin didn't want all of Ukraine what was the thrust at Kiev all about?

Saying Russian ruling class (including Putin) has no imperialist ambition is shallow and ahistorical.

People saying “he was just trying to reinstate pro-Russian government, not occupy” completely disregard the possibility of “reinstated pro-Russian government” “asking nicely” to be incorporated into Moscow rule or “gifting” territories and population to moscow overlords. Or just look at Belarus.

Miersheimer is completely out of touch on this point.

I always amaze how the US became so clueless about understanding its competitor. Does the CIA never brief the president or the politicians never listen to the CIA?

some in russia think they‘d be greeted with flowers instead of bullets. that‘s why they only prepared 190k troops.
when that didn‘t happen, russia didn‘t have a plan b and are since stuck with the war.

NATO and the European Union are the ones to blame and not the guy that invaded another country....

Putin literrally compared himself to Tsar Alexander and said he wanted to rebuild the Russian Empire. John Mearsheimer is a stooge.

If Putin didn’t want all of Ukraine then why was there a battle for Kiev? Why did he try to take Kiev?

"Putin isn't an imperialist". Um, yes he is. He didn't end the war, he didn't just have troops outside of Kyiv for "no reason"....if he could take all of Ukraine that's exactly what he'd do, This dude needs to keep up on current events.

This guy is expired. A few issues with his argument.

1) The fact that Putin invaded any area at all makes him Imperialist.

2) If Putin only wanted Eastern Ukraine why the 60 MILE column to Kyiv?

3.1) Saying if Putin wanted Eastern Europe he would have had it by now falsely assume Putin had a strong army to begin with which is false and the evidence is obvious ever since the invasion till now.

3.2) Putin obviously thought NATO will collapse and Germany will side with Russia and never expected the immediate overwhelming sanctions. This supports the idea he had bigger plans. Plus he has been cozing up with Xi long before the war started. They have a mutual plan to achieve their geopolitical objectives together as a deterrent to the West. China obviously has plans of conquest itself.

I understand that he's much more educated on this subject than I am, but I have to disagree with his position. If Putin didn't want to conquer Ukraine, then why did one of his initial invasion forces head straight for Kyiv? Additionally, multiple military experts (analysts, retired generals, etc) estimate that Russia now has over 90% of its active forces invested in Ukraine. Putin seems to be very serious about this.

And what about the letter from December demanding moving NATO back from Poland, Baltics and Romania? What about Putin saying Ukraine is not a country? Piss me off that Friedman is not asking such obvious questions, and let Mearsheimer propagate his problematic views unchallanged

The problem with John's argument is that he doesn't discuss the other 4 or 5 major reasons Russia is doing what it's doing

Just because Putin wanted to have peace talks and claim land early doesn’t mean he would have started another war a week after a peace agreement was signed, sounds pretty naive to me🙄

This guy doesn’t have a clue. If you want to know motives ask anyone in the street in Donetsk.

Does Lex really not push back on this at all? Or did they cut the clip short? I need to listen to the entire episode.

In 2003, the Western coalition (US, UK, Australia) sent 160, 000 troops into Iraq for the invasion stage.

How can such an intelligent man make such a bad comparison between Russia's invasion of Ukraine with 190, 000 soldiers and the Wehrmacht's invasion of Poland?

If he wanted to make a serious comparison, he would have taken Germany's invasion of Austria in 1938. At that time, Germany had around 65, 000 men (soldiers, police and SS) and was greeted with the cheers of the Austrian civilian population.

The fact that in the first wave of the Russian invasion there was a bloody band of musicians for military parades and police units with rubber bullets is at least an indication that Putin was counting on the Austrian comparison.

He definitely wants the Baltics.

We know about Moldova.

He's moving to annex Belarus.

Is there a difference between removing Zelensky and putting in a pro-Russian strongman and conquering?
