We got an inside look at how United States Marine Corps recruits are trained to rappel down a 47-foot-tall tower. Senior video correspondent Graham Flanagan spent five days at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in Parris Island, SC, where he observed recruits at various stages of boot camp. Recruits learn two different types of rappelling techniques: fast-roping and static rappel. According to the depot, the training is designed to instill confidence, and introduce recruits to environments they may encounter while serving in the Corps.

I think for me this was the one time throughout training where the Drills didn’t yell at us much because most of them had a great fear of heights too (believe it or not)

When I did this at boot camp I was terrified. I was and still am terrified of heights. I was just more scared of the drill instructor up at the top. Plus he said he would catch me if I fell.

I have a terrible fear of heights. It's good to see that these fine men and women can be scared just like me but, are brave enough to try their best with the help of thier follow marines. It makes me want to be braver in my life too. God bless all of our soldiers.

One of my drills crushed his pack of smokes trying to help a terrified private and smoked the shit out of him later for it. It was hilarious

This was the 7th different video I watched this morning on how to overcome fear of heights. Not a single one has any useful tips or ticks, and nothing where the advice leads to a “before and after” comparison, they are all useless, except this one. At the very end I found the most useful tip.

This is literally the exact video I needed for this specific purpose

Usually the hard part is the transition of the body weight from vertical to the harness as you just go over the edge. The "safety harness" is made out of cordage. The Drill Instructors have complete control and can brake the recruits from the ground.

I’m going to basic training this summer at Leonard Wood with the Army. Honestly, I know I’ll struggle with a lot of things but I believe I can power through the yelling and the PT and the gas chamber

Those things still scare me but heights are the biggest thing that scares me. Literally when I get just feet off the ground I freeze. I don’t know, I guess I’ll just have to conquer it too I guess

I was in the army... Extreme fear of high places. Repel tower. My drill Sargent noticed that I wasn't feeling very MOTIVATED... Gently held my shoulder... GRIPPED MY UNIFORM AND HELD ME OVER THE Edge with one arm. Screaming "ARE YOU SCARED TOO DIE TRAINNIE?" I was like SAVE ME DRILL SARGENT!!!!

I'd like to point out a big flaw in this video that no one has addressed. It does not show fast-roping. The scene where the narrator explains it just shows rappelling without the assist of the wall. Fast roping is similar to the rope climb in gym class, except obviously in the opposite direction. A harness is not required.
