Oddly enough, I'm into metal detecting in the southwest of the USA. Treasure hunting is 3/4 research, and only about a quarter of ones time in actual hunting in the field. In my past searches for mines and other things, I am researching priests who went along on every Spanish expedition. (Usually they were Jesuits.)

Like all governments, these priests were said to be along to convert the heathens they found, but they seldom bothered with such duties. Instead they often guided and located ore bearing areas. Lay people of the time said they learned to find gold from the Inca. Soldiers speak of the priests using a "staff" in the process.

They even mined rather small outcroppings of ore, often depleting an area during a single summer of an expedition into the wilderness. But they located silver and gold much more regularly than later miners. Did they gain some knowledge or tech that made locating gold a simple matter? Was this handed down knowledge from a "time before", when the Inca were "closer" to the "gods" ?
