You forgot the best part: 682 initially tried to attack 272 (which results in the instant death of the attacker) but then stopped and apparently was able to read the runic symbols on the nail (which the Foundation had not been able to decipher) and left it alone. This apparently means that not only was 682 able to understand the symbols, he apparently was familiar with 272 itself and its properties.

I mean the old iron nail also serves as a means of keeping a target in place as the victim is unable to remove it by any means. Damage done to it is also repaired almost instantly by magic and the one who tried to damage it is killed. As a result this would indeed serve as a means for keeping 682 contained in what may be a more reliable manner than the vat of acid.
