We’ve lined up the 2024 Audi Q5 Sport 45 TFSI quattro and the Mazda CX-60 G40e Azami to see whether Mazda’s recent upmarket push elevates it to premium car status.

The Mazda has a lot to prove. If it wants to land a punch on one of Germany’s best-selling SUVs, it needs to be exceptional. The CX-60 offers plenty of sophistication and many premium features, including a refined new six-cylinder turbo-petrol engine with mild hybrid elements. It also boasts luxurious leather-upholstered seats.

But if you didn’t know which SUV was which and all the badges were covered up, would the Mazda hold its own? We found out in this car review comparison.

Totally, absolutely and unequivocally the Mazda CX60 for me. I have been a Mazda fan for about 20 yers now, never once had a problem with any of them. Audi Q5 on the other hand, is German for “LEMON”. Money pits in waiting, unless you can buy new ones every few years.

Not being a badge snob, I'd buy the Mazda. If only you could get it without the mild hybrid system.😊

My CX-60 P50e Vision Luxury, in Soul Red Crystal is now parked in my Garage, as of tonight... Took her out for the 1st evening cruise tonight..., think I'm in 😍😎

Would it be worth installing an aftermarket shock absorber or adaptive damper, like the Tein + EDFC5, on the CX-60? As this seems to be the only major issue with the car😮

4:27 no, it’s got a planetary automatic transmission (like a normal auto) with a wet multi-plate clutchpack in place of a torque converter. It is not a single-clutch automatic.

How is it that Mazda hasn't got its suspension/transmission sorted. How long have they they been building cars?

Definitely Mazda for me. Better value for money. I also think the Mazda badge is as good as the Audi's atleast in this particular comparison and segment.

Mazda CX-60 with the ironic 3.3 turbocharged L6 only 209kw against the Audi Q5 with 2.0 turbocharged L4 with minimal 183kw; CX-60 deserves a power boost to 276kw and Q5 also deserves a 232kw boost.

Comparing the Mazda CX-60 to the Audi Q5, a 7-year-old model soon to be replaced in a few months, feels irrelevant. A more fitting comparison would be with models like the Lexus RX or Genesis GV70, which are more aligned with the preferences of potential CX-60 buyers. History has shown that those loyal to European luxury brands or willing to pay a premium are unlikely to switch to Mazda, regardless of differing opinions. Mazda seems to recognise this, drawing lessons from their experience with Eunos. Their focus is on appealing to existing Mazda owners or buyers in a similar price range who want to step up in features and finishes without incurring the higher costs of European luxury vehicles.

Why didn't you compare it to a Audi Q5 with an equivalent 6 cylinder engine?

"Cubic" litreage? As opposed to what other type of litreage, squared? Also, surely when one spends $80k to $90k on a car one would spend 20 to 30 bucks on bottles that suit the particular vehicle? I'm not a fan of either of the cars and they are certainly not prestige or luxury models. Out of those two i'd choose the most comfortable one to sit in and the easiest to ingress and egress.

Aside from badge value, is Q5 worth 15k more??

I think it’s a very very strong effort from Mazdas first luxury car. Every brand starts somewhere take Lexus for example and look how successful they have been. If Mazda can keep tweaking the cx60 and make better dynamically and keep building other luxury models look out Lexus and Audi! The engine reminds me of a BMW. And in my books they’ve already passed VW for luxury 🤣 long answer short don’t be a brand snob and 100% consider the cx60 if your looking at something that size especially after the suspension and gear box upgrades

Which one would be more reliable 🤔. Audi not the reliable car anymore. Mazda for me.

Mazda 3, 3 engine is diesel, not petrol like it is told in video. So it is reasonable Mazda fuel consumption is lower than Audi which has petrol engine.

Own a CX60 and I'm thinking to trade my CX60 to get a Q5. It's horrible experience for rear passengers in CX60. It's bouncy and hard. I can understand being hard as a sports SUV, but not being bouncy. In some occasions on UK country roads you really loose control of the car. Thats how worse it is.

Overall Mazda CX 60 looks much more stylish and masculine than the Audi Q5

Audi's are unreliable, expensive to fix and have terrible depreciation. Why anyone would buy one is beyond me. Oh and it's still more expensive.

Mazda is actually only 6 cm longer than audi Q5, not 16 which is obviously incorrect. It is also not true that there is more space in back seat. I've sat in the back seats of both cars and it's very similar. Mazda is also incomparably worse when it comes to handling characteristics such as the chassis in particular. Mazda is a terribly rocking car in corners and uncomfortable on bumps. The Audi is a class better car.
