Unfortunately, we're still using Windows XP to this day, just a different UI and a handful of new driver models. There really weren't that many under the hood changes. It's still NT, it's still the standard X model, and we're still using NTFS. Pre-reset Longhorn was built on entirely different technologies. Storage was one of the big changes as was front end (using server oriented metadata cataloging). If you opened "My Documents", you would have seen a page resembling a search engine website, search box and results instead of clickable thumbnail icons that we still see today.
