Toyo Open Country AT3 Long Term Review

Join us here as we do a long term review of the Toyo Open Country A/T III

The A/T III according to Toyo is that the new tread pattern "delivers gripping off-road traction with responsive and predictable on-road handling," and features include a new tread compound and design for enhanced grip, increased cut and chip resistance and a quiet, comfortable ride; a more evenly distributed void area for extra traction, increase tread block rigidity and an enhanced worn appearance; staggered shoulder lugs for increased off-road performance; 3D multi-wave sipes for enhanced wet and snow traction and irregular wear minimisation; stone ejecting blocks, and more.

We actually got a glimpse of the AT3 back in 2019 at the SEMA show in the U.S. With over 13 sizes for the Australian market, there will be a size for most of your on/off road needs. It really is a great upgrade from the AT2.

Check out our AT2 long term review here:

Head to our website and leave a review. We'd love to hear your experience with the Open Country AT2 and AT3 by Toyo.

TYRE REVIEW HQ DISCLAIMER -

This video was filmed on 4 different cameras, a spaceship, a playstation, 3 different microphone's and one can of energy drink; But we got there in the end, and we hope you enjoy these sick clips of B roll, and A roll or as I like to call it J roll (J for Jared) lol.

The AT2's were horrible in the snow in the Rocky Mountains. Didn't matter what vehicle, they sucked. The 3's are night and day better!

Had a set of AT2's on a vehicle and got 140, 000klm's out of them. One of them got damaged on the sidewall and I took it back to the Tyre power dealer I originally bought them through to see if he could fix it as I wanted to see how many klm's I could get out of them. When I told him how many klm's they had done he said, no way but after checking is records (as I said I bought them from him originally) he soon realised I wasn't lying. I haven't tried the AT3's yet but the AT2's were incredible for wear. Got quite noisy by the end but from my experience they are great tyres.

Had a set on my Ranger for nearly 30k now. Wet performance is definitely falling away. Happy with the noise levels and performance around town highway etc. I've done around 10k in gravel/sand and they have been excellent. Wear level is excellent too.

275/65R17 … Toyo supplies this size in Australia too! Great alternative for Toyota owners that want a little more sidewall and staying legal and no scrubbing … you get a minimum 31 inch total diameter with a minimum 6.5mm more sidewall which equates to a minimum lift of 6.5mm underbody clearance. The additional width certainly helps as well. Legal minimum wheel 17x6.5 so that covers many standard Toyota wheels including FJ cruiser standard wheel. Your speedometer will only be out by 1.6% so it’s almost unnoticeable considering most speedos will read 100 when you are really doing 95klm

Hope that helps someone out there.

I have a 2016 GMC Canyon 2WD extended cab, long box. I put Toyo Open Country H/T II 235/65R18XL on the front and Toyo Open Country A/T III LT285/65R18 on the back. I run this "farm truck" tire setup all year in Alberta, Canada. I had the same setup on my previous truck (2002 Sonoma) but obviously in a smaller size. I do get some wheelspin but I look at the snowy road and try to find traction on the "rough" snow at the edge of the road. I drive on paved city streets and occasional gravel and dirt roads. I preferred the look of the jagged center treadblock of the A/T II tires but the A/T III tires work great and I really like them.

Thanks for the brief review. Will try them on my Disco Sport (235/60R18). Cheers!

Thank you for your review. I am looking hard at several tires for my 2022 Taco which is 2wd but I do a lot of camping down gravel roads towing a Squaredrop camper. I have gotten the Taco (almost) stuck with its stock tires on soft wet ground and do not want any issues while camping. So far the AT3 is at the head of the pack on tires I am interested in.
Again, thanks for your review, stay safe and God bless.

Have a set of these in 37’s on my gladiator. Glad to hear I’m not the only one with underwhelming wet weather experience. In addition to that, the hydroplaning is some of the worst I’ve ever dealt with.

What’s that music bed used at 5:05 in this video? I want it. Never mind…found it!

I had a set of AT2s 215/65R17 on Nissan X-Trail and they were the best tyres I have ever owned. Mostly on rough sealed roads and gravel but not offroad.

I particularly liked the sharp steering response, almost twitchy which I enjoyed; it made driving the X-Trail actually fun when it is normally quite a dull car.

I replaced those with BFG KO2s which are noisy understeer and lack any sort of road confidence so those probably slowed me down 20% - 30%.

I would have got more AT2s but they were unobtanium during the pandemic insanity.

The AT3 were also unobtaininum as were Falken AT3W.

Next time, hopefully, I will be able to get Toyos again.

Nice review Sir; do you represent a retailer in Hobart? If so which one?

5:06 please, to what pressure did you drop the tyres before doing this mud crawling?

You need to do a comparison test of the toyo AT3 vs is closest competitor...the Falken AT3W. BFG ain't even in the show unless you want to use that as a baseline. The tread pattern is almost identical, both 3PMSF rated, both 2 ply sides.

When it comes to noise why don't you use a decibel reader determine exactly how much noise..
Thinking of changing the Bridgestone on my Y62 absolute useless on gravel roads they end end up having Rocks pierce your tyres.
Sounds perfect for what I want My Roads are all gravel and my property is all four-wheel drive. LOL

Thanks for your long term review. I've been waiting for this to come out before upgrading my stock Toyo A32s on my Pajero Sport. What other AT tires should I short-list?
