Alien life visiting this planet will not necessarily unify Humanity. It might be what divides us even further. If we can't unify without the imminent threat of this alien being or the vast change that this alien being will bring. Even if this changes a very positive thing. It will be very stressful for Humanity.
Saying that Humanity will unify is like saying that getting married or having a child will improve a dysfunctional relationship. None of the core issues have been solved all you've done is double down on the stress and difficulty.

If that superbeing came from Alpha Centauri we're talking about 24 trillion Mi away. If it comes from deeper in the Galaxy we could be talking 300 trillion miles away. In short, what will happen is exactly what that being dictates.
I understand, this guy is a Harvard guy and has degrees and gets grants. He just doesn't come across as somebody who's very smart. Let's be realistic, this is some junior high level thought.
