Does Avi Loeb Have Proof of Alien Technology? (342)

For those of you who don't know him, Avi is a professor of science at Harvard University, theoretical physicist, astrophysicist, and cosmologist. He is also a bestselling author and a dear friend of mine.

By the time you see this, Avi will have published his new book, Interstellar: The Search for Extraterrestrial Life and Our Future in the Stars. In it, he explains why we need to become an interstellar species to ensure our survival and lays out a plan for how we can settle among the stars.

As usual, we take some time to judge a book by its cover and discuss what went into the making of this book. We also dig into the recent Galileo Project expedition to the Pacific Ocean to retrieve spherules of the first recognized interstellar meteor, IM1, which was led by Avi, and discuss whether they found evidence of alien life.

The world needs more brian keatings. The dude literally is raising a family of 5, works as a professor teaching students and yet still churns out quality content with a smile, jokes and enthusiasm. This man deserves all the fame he gets. Avi is awesome too.

I truly love that Avi is using the current public interest in UFOs to drive inquiry and interest in astronomy and science in general. Leading by example, he’s motivating many (even critics) to do more work and less bickering. That’s my hope anyway.

Boy will ET be shocked when they say "Take us to your leaders" and we say "PLEASE TAKE OUR LEADERS FROM US" lol

15 min in and I must say that for all the criticism that Avi gets, he makes great rational arguments for the hypocrisy in these fields.

Avi is a joy to listen to, he's never afraid to tell things as they are. Common sense with guts, great guy!

I stumbled upon Dr. Loeb via UFO content; I stick with him to learn about science.

Whenever a video or news headline contains a question, the answer is always "no".

What a wonderful interview! Brian has really honed his skills over the last few years, and this was a great balance between letting the interviewee speak and offering interesting insights at the appropriate moments. I have to say, I haven't always been a fan. I've been won over recently though. More importantly, I also really appreciate the way Brian has a healthy take on what scientists ought to be doing and supports Avi Loeb's work - and indeed other scientists' with novel ideas. Albeit I sense that Brian is more sceptical about UAP and so on (but not closed to the idea), he is so explicitly respectful, you really wouldn't know. Surely research is an exploratory exercise, an attempt to seek new information, meanings and ways of making sense of the world. Great job!

This approach really seems to contrast with physicists such as Sean Carroll who dismisses the UAP topic based on "priors", the idea that you know enough to know something does or doesn't exist before looking (or at least that's the way he explains it). I'm not sure how this is scientific.., I'm not sure how Einstein would have discovered relativity by - only - referring to what is already known. I am not a Bayesian, I don't know much about it, and don't use this philosophy in my research (mental health care). However, it seems that being a Bayesian in the way Carrol suggests is a fairly limiting condition if you want to be creative and explore new concepts. Is it these kinds of philosophies that are preventing from physics progressing in general, maybe? As a nurse researcher, I have no idea. I'd appreciate someone more informed shedding some light on this..

I'm a different sort of academic, a historian with a terminal degree. My specialty is the Cold War, so I do love studying UFO/Sci-Fi culture. And AL's Galileo Project is fascinating. However, every time he appears somewhere he's introduced as someone who's "authored" or "published" over 700 articles. How's that? The average academic article takes at least a year to research, write and get published. Are these mainly articles he's supervised and not necessarily authored? Because a literal meaning to this claim seems impossible. And if he didn't actually write most of them, it seems like an inflated claim.

The most exciting aspect (to me) of the ‘craft’ that the Navy pilots claim to have experienced is that if they are ever verified to exist as advertised then this might very well suggest that faster than light travel is feasible. What could be more exciting than the stars being a click away!

We can’t find a Jumbo jet airliner that crashes into the ocean, but we can find a 3 meter diameter meteorite

I've heard people denigrating Avi just because they think it's funny to do it. I do not hesitate to call them out for their childish and unprofessional behavior.
