For other users: Only USB 2.0 ports are scanned before the internal ones (this is true for TS-469L, I suppose some other mobos may behave differently) the USB 3 ports scan after and since the BIOS boots from the first . The BIOS does not allow you to change the detected usb flash drives boot order. There is no hot key to select the boot device. Crippled BIOS. once it boots from anything other device you could craft your own boot loader flash key to boot whatever you want.

That's cool. I've thought about qnap devices couple times, but I've always turned off from the idea as I've always thought that you couldn't hack any other os inside them. Thanks for the video and information.

Cool video, today I learnt where some of those AMD Ryzen Embedded V1000 chips went ....

If you are following this tutorial and installing this on USB-drive, you should do this (Queto from openmediavaults documentation):
"Enable the openmediavault-flashmemory plugin. This lowers the amount of writes to the USB flash drive, making sure you can enjoy it for a long time."

I did that with the Lenovo EMC PX4-400D NAS appliance that they were closing out recently for $100. Except I went with Unraid. I was also able to get Xpenology running on it but decided to pay for Unraid because of how disk space works there.

@technodad Great tutorial about how to use the hardware of a Qnap for a better software solution than the QTS crap with hooveringhelp assistants and tons of never used and unnessesary apps and possibilities.
My only two goals are:
a) store my files with user rights
b) make a backup over rsync to another (identical) Qnap.
Fun thing is I can just remove the existing raid1 array, remove the usb dongle and then give the hardware an "Altzheimer experience"
If it doesn't work out well, I can replace the USB dongle and replace the original harddisks and that's it 🙂.

I would appriciate an anwer to two questions:
a) How fast will the USB stick wear out and can you use a dual SN/M.2 harddisk over two usb ports in order to have a more reliable OS?
b) Are all HDD's and SSD's supported by Openvault?

I wanted to upgrade my 2x4TB HDD's (amongst them one faulty ST4000 Ironwolf disk) to a dual Samsung 8TB SSD setup in order to minimalise the noise and energy consumption.

If not, I'll - with regrets - stuck with just swapping the faulty Seagate ST4000 drive with two HGST drives that have the lowest failure rate.

VERY nice tutorial that made me think about migriting to after years of too complicated QTS software.

Do you think, it possible to install casaos or zimaos on Qnap as the same ?

Did you ever configure your QNAP to use both network cards? There aren't any videos on OMV where multiple network cards are configured much less any bridge or bonding videos...

Is it possible to install OpenMediaVault on the QNAP without having to wipe the data on the existing HD's and recreate the Shares etc

Great! Will this work on a TS439 pro II+ with 2GB?

Hello, thank you for the useful videos. Please me with my OMV. Do you know how to keep /etc/resolv.conf from being overwritten at boot? Thanks, best wishes.

@TechnoDadLife i recent bought a Qnap TS-133-US. For a measly 120.00 usd 👀. Problem is the decive has no hdmi out. And looking at the manual for this device, looks like puTTy is gonna have to be my new best friend. Question i have for you is, if i install omv on a usb stick and get it to boot from the qnap will i beable to access omv via puTTy on the network to install omv to the ts-133? Thanks for your time and concern. Or make a tutorial video?

Hello @TechnoDadLife thanks for the great video! I wonder if it is possible to use the same technique to install proxmox on the QNAP. I liked OMV but it consumes more resources than proxmox when idle (as pointed by several other videos on YT) I guess I will try this project in a week or two.

Hi thank you very much for the wise information, does this method also work on a GNAP TS-559 pro 2 with an intel Anton processor?. Or are there any other open source firmware`s to use on my EOL NAS to your knowledge. My thanks will be great for your information

Strange that you need to remove the internal USB card ... must be something about that specific model.
I had no issue with my TS-453A. A simple BIOS change to boot from the USB stick instead of the internal USB drive was all that's needed.
