The D500 is the very best crop sensor camera you can possibly buy for photography. It does everything well. Landscapes are a piece of cake with any camera, so it doesn't count. When you really need the camera to deliver is when you have motion going on: sports, wildlife, birds in flight, parties, and so on. The D500 never fails. The autofocus is the very best you can get. Image quality is top notch. Low light is a breeze when considering it is a crop sensor camera. ISO 4000, 5000, 6400... you are just good to go. If you need a crop sensor camera for pictures, buy a D500 and be happy! If you need it for video this is another story: if you are a professional videomaker you will probably work on manual focus anyways. So any camera would do the thing while focusing manually. Otherwise buy a Panasonic S5 and be happy! The S5 takes absolute great pictures, too, and it is a full frame camera. But I will repeat: For subjects in motion there is nothing better than the D500 if you want a crop sensor camera. THe D500 is all about speed, highly effective in any situation, it's all about delivering. If you use a D500 you know what I am talking about. We have the D5, the D6, the Z9... Those are at the same level of the D500 with the advantage of a full frame sensor. The price for these full frame bodies, however, will be much higher. You can't go wrong with the D500. It is a professional camera and needs professional glass to fully open the possibilities of the camera and deliver the best possible images you can get. So, don't buy the more expensive bodies. Save the money and buy the best lenses. The lenses will do the thing for you. Pair the D500 with any prime (12, 16, 24, 35, 50, 80 mm lenses) and you will be amazed by the quality of the images. Or buy professional zoom lenses. I recently bought a Tamron 70-200 F/2.8 G2. This lens with the D500 delivers astonishing quality for any professional taking pictures of sports and events in general. Just top professional quality.

I tested the D500. Very pleased with the pro features and build. Very comparable as the D850. As a crop factor camera, the focus points go pretty much go edge to edge which is a plus. The small medium large focus groups makes the camera a pleasure to shoot. I tested with a 70-200 lens and I still crop the pictures if it had a bigger megapixel sensor or double density sensor it would been perfect for me. I am currently waiting for my z9. If the focus groups are similar to the D500 that would be icing on the cake. I will gladly keep the D500 in my collection of cameras.

Is the D500 worth buying over the D7500, the XQD cards are a bit steep in price and can you use the Camera without the XQD card installed?

I have been shooting Nikon since Nikon F. Had all the cameras Nikon has produced. From the Nikon F to the Z9. My passion? BIF (Birds In Flight) photography. I have the Nikkor AF-S 300mm f/4D IF-ED. Amazing lens! So much they still produce and sell brand new. This lens with the TC-14II is another pearl combination. Not image loss or autofocus speed. Snap to the point in no time. Nikkor AF-S 500mm F/4.0 VRII another amazing pearl. Works the same way with TC-14 III, Nikkor AF-S 600mm F/4.0 FL. This is a beast! Works great with all the TCs. Nikkor AF-S 800mm F/5.6 FL is slow. I sold it. Not worth a penny for BIF. My Sigma 150-600mm is auto-focus faster than that lens. Let me tell you this: Nikon has the best autofocus system ever developed in the D500 (Same on the D5 and D850). I shoot more keepers with this camera then with the Z9. Believe it or not, the camera is faster to acquire the bird in flight at any background including the busy ones. It locks on it and does not let go, keeps tracking head on to you at speeds of 60 miles an hour or more. It is more sensitive to low light than the Z9 despite the fact that in theory the Z9 shows better sensitivity on the specs. I like the camera so much that I purchased another brand new one in January 2023. the camera is out of production in February and now B&H is selling brand new again. Noise? what is that? with Photolab 6, noise is not an issue anymore. I regret that I purchased the Z9 and the Z 800mm. The workflow is terrible. if you shoot 20, 30, 60 or 120 FPS you will have tons of photos and how long it will take you to download? I don't like to spend hours behind the computer. I could write a book about this matter. Don't sell your D500. keep it and learn all the camera does for BIF you will love it. You will not learn overnight what the camera is capable of. However, persisting in finding all the camera does relentlessly you will be great at BIF. Sure lots of "experts" will start "attacking" what I just said. Believe me. My best shots I take with my D500. A lens I don't have it and will purchase soon is the Nikkor AF-F 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR it is small and super light and snappy at autofocus. Together with the D500 it will be the KILLER!

I chose it for aviation spotting, going to airshows. The fps and buffer are a huge deal, so hopefully it will do the job. Really looking forward to the day I have the money to buy it. Very soon... Does any of you use it for aviation photography?

I bought my D500 three years ago. Mostly because I had some Nikkor lenses already. And so far, I haven’t regret it. And also, I don’t have the money to buy a new system. Mirrorless or not. It’s not cheap, but I love it!!

I own this wonderful camera. For me, I prefer a DSLR vs. Mirrorless, as what you see is EXACTLY what you get. My, since sold, Fuji XH-1 had a great view finder, but I could not trust it with regard for seeing accurate color rendition and exposure of the scene I was photographing. I worked long and hard w/this beauty, but in the end a DSLR was more reliable for seeing the reality of the scene. Yes, I did a lot of chipping; but it's a WYSIWYG camera and I can rely upon the LCD for accurate reproduction of what I saw when taking the photo. It's no wonder that this camera is still relevant after 17 years of production.

My number one camera for nature photography even if I do have some 4/3 cameras as well, the Nikon D500 built quality is especially good, it feels just right in the hands, I was thinking if there was anything to say negative about the D500, can’t think of anything.

If I had a mirrorless and shot the way I shoot, 1000 photos an afternoon, I would go through 4 or more batteries with no time to charge. I looked at the World Cup sideline, and, of course, not a single mirrorless camera in any kit. No one can afford to switch batteries at such a rate. When will these companies learn? The DSLR is a superior camera in so many ways beginning with the MIRROR! All hail the mighty prism. Got off track.

You were incorrect in saying the camera can focus down to -3 EV. It will focus down to -4 EV when using the central AF. It is also compatible with CF-Express cards Type B cards as well as XQD and SD cards.
