New recordings that capture the sound of narwhals buzzing, clicking and whistling underwater could help scientists learn more about the mysterious creatures.
Narwhals are toothed whales that live in the Arctic. They’re sometimes called “unicorns of the sea.” Narwhals are shy animals, which makes them difficult to study.
In July 2019, a group of scientists got help from Inuit hunters so that they could get close to the animals off the coast of Greenland. The researchers used underwater microphones attached to small boats to record them. They managed to capture the sounds of the animals hunting for prey and socializing with each other.
