Bodycam: Hallucinating Suspect Attacks Cop with Knife Before Deadly Shooting

Bodycam footage shows the moments surrounding the deadly shooting of a California man allegedly hallucinating on April 28. The Oxnard Police Department said 24-year-old Michael Owens locked himself in the bathroom after officers responded to a 911 call from neighbors and Owens himself, who was asking for a paramedic. Owens was shot after allegedly lunging at an officer while armed with a knife. The Law&Crime Network’s Sierra Gillespie breaks it down.

If he has a knife what are they suppose to do let him stab them just because he is hallucinatinating. These people are dangerous regardless due to the state they are in and you don't just let them harm others because of it.

The officer was called because the paramedics feared for their safety.
The officer tried to calm the guy down but it quickly became a him or me situation. The officer did the right thing and went home safely as did all the paramedics et al.
Mental health issues are a big problem. It is time for people to realize that there is a dire shortage of psychiatric hospitals to treat people, and it is costing society far more by not having the institutions to help.
Prayers to the officer who will need his own treatment for his inevitable PTSD.

If you ever decide to take psychedelics (many of you will) you should make sure to be around trusted friends who are sober that will keep you safe. Most people are fine, but some people can start freaking out like this guy did. They’re safe for the majority, but isolated incidents like this make them look bad, which is a shame.

Once someone is a danger to themselves and others mental health is irrelevant. It’s up to the individuals loved ones and themselves to get the help they need BEFORE it leads to something like this. What if when the paramedics first arrived he just stabbed them to death? Or if the officer fired his taser instead but it doesn’t make good contact so he gets stabbed? His mental health being unstable isn’t a excuse nor does it lighten the fact that multiple people are now either dead or severely injured.

That guy maybe meant no harm to the officer, or maybe he wanted to kill him, we’ll never know but what did you expect the officer to do. He protected himself and others as far as I’m concerned.

Officer acted within his means and shouldn’t be investigated. The body cam footage alone tells you it was justified. It’s a shame it costed a human life but with the way that call was going it would’ve happened regardless. Tasers and rubber bullets don’t work in this scenario, the subject was still fighting the officer after being shot. People seem to think tasers and rubber bullets are a magical cure all but they are not. It’s the same people who haven’t come across an altered mental status person and had to deal with them in a scenario like this. Excellent work by the officer, my condolences to the victims family, but this is life. Praying for everyone in this scenario

Why is the cop even under investigation? What was his duty to begin with, to protect society to keep a safe environment from crimes and threats. A guy is holding a knife and is charging at you who is trying to help him and treat him, what do they expect the cop to do, take the stab and die? Is that what he is trained to do, to sacrifice good human life in place of a criminal?
