Hi,

I am Charel Wohl, a PhD student based at Plymouth Marine Laboratory. In this short 1 min Video, I describe the topic of my PhD.

Different gases, like methanol or acetone, are released into the atmosphere by a variety of human and environmental processes. In the atmosphere, these gases are oxidized and hence influence ability of the atmosphere to cleanse itself from toxic pollutants. In the oceans, there are processes that produce these compounds as well, like reactions with light at the surface of the sea or algae next to the ice. During my PhD, I will measure these compounds in the atmosphere and in the sea to calculate if the polar oceans absorb or emit these compounds.
