President Russell M. Nelson on the Healing Power of Gratitude

“Gratitude provides us with a greater perspective on the very purpose and joy of life.”

In his 96 years of life, President Russell M. Nelson of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has seen almost everything—a Great Depression, a world war, and a global pandemic, to name a few. And he would like to propose one remedy that can help us find joy in hard times: gratitude. #GiveThanks

Practicing gratitude may not prevent us from experiencing sorrow, anger, or pain, but it can help us look forward with hope. We can give thanks for our loved ones, for our bodies and minds, for music and literature, for the beauty of the natural world.

President Nelson suggests three ways you can #GiveThanks in your own life:

1) Turn social media into your own gratitude journal.
2) Say a prayer of gratitude.
3) Build your relationship with Jesus Christ.

By counting our blessings, we can more fully appreciate and enjoy our lives as we work toward greater unity, kindness, honesty, and tolerance.

I am not a member of the LDS faith, however I have been watching and enjoying many sacrament meetings that have been broadcast online during this time of covid. I choose to not criticize those who are different than me but I choose to find the ways that unite us. I believe President Nelson is a prophet of God and I thank him for taking the time to pray with all of us. I am grateful for our similarities and for those things that unite us. I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

Over the years I have slowly fallen out of the church, I never stopped believing but I have wandered from the iron rod a bit but over this pandemic I have been able to make my way back. I have put my full heart back into my amazing church. While a have been gone into the church building it’s self because of the pandemic I have been reading my bible more, listening to the music more and praying more. I feel so much better having been able to get myself back to where I am supposed to be with my lord in my heart at all times and I’m so thankful for this church as this is what I have grown up in and while I have wandered I know I will always be able to come back and be with my Eternal family

I still remember where I was two years ago when this message was given. I sat by my little girls bedside at the hospital while listening to President Nelsons speak about the healing power of gratitude. Five days earlier my little one had been severely injured in an accident and lay in a coma while her body healed. I still remember kneeling by her bedside during President Nelson's powerful prayer and I earnestly prayed for the same things he did! That experience and message gave me the courage to continually ask for miracles and thank God for the miracles he sent during the 3 months that followed. We witnessed unprecedented healing up to the day God took her home. It is strange to say that, to witness healing before death. God was merciful in so many ways.

Today I listened to this message again on the anniversary of my daughters accident. This message now brings me new perspective. As I follow the gratitude pattern President Nelson exemplified in the video, I thank God for the time I had with my baby. I thank God for her healing. I thank God for all the doctors who extended her life. I thank God I was able to hear her sweet voice again and hear her express her love so many times during those few short months. I thank God for all the financial miracles he sent from such an expensive stay in the hospital and for the countless angels that came to our aide and prayed along with us. I am grateful for and appreciate the children that are living. There is so much to be thankful for...

I’m grateful for the time and memories I’ve had with my sister. She passed away yesterday and I wept at work and my tender heart ached with pain. Then I saw this... ❤️

Halfway through 2024, 3 years later and I just re-watched this message. President Nelson sure has a heart of gold. What a treat it is to come back and listen to the way he gives thanks to God and prays for humanity. He truly is a living prophet of God.

I consider myself a nondenominational Christian, and I like to hear from folks from across the Christian spectrum. I’m grateful for the man I’m seeing . He’s courteous, kind man who loves me and God. Even if we don’t last, he taught me what a healthy relationship looks like. He treats me better than any other I’ve dated, and after a lot of inner debate with myself, I’ve decided to pitch the idea of him and me praying together. #GiveThanks

It's completely inspired that Dr Nelson is also President Nelson. And when was the last time the prophet prayed with the world? Usually it's a 70 during conference time. It's a great day to be alive.

This remedy, GRATITUDE, was what healed my wounds. In my darkest times which included the pandemic as I thought all was lost then, it was to leave all the troubles behind and be grateful for what I once had, for those happy moments, even if for a short time, for what I still had at that moment. Everyday, being gratiful for those I met, those I spoke to, the day, the life and for still having a place to lay my head and sleep. Soon, the fear, the bad thoughts, the dispair, all those bad feelings went away and gave place to relief, to hope, and thus I was able to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Just a simple thing, GRATITUDE, changed it all. Thank you Pres Nelson for reminding me of this.

I don’t know if I can recall ever being able to watch a prophet of God pray - what a powerful feeling it was for me to notice the music go silent, see him bow his head and listen to his words! I am so thankful for President Nelson! #GiveThanks
