testing SPF foundation with a UV camera 😮

Bcus UV camera picks up only UA A rays blockage and most of the foundations i have seen has only UV B protection. Maybelline is one of them

Foundations with spf in them don’t actually have enough spf to protect the skin. In order to get the same amount of protection as you would a normal SPF, you would need to apply A LOT of foundation, as you need 2.7g of spf for your face, but foundations have so much other stuff in them that the spf added to it is very little and watered down, it doesn’t protect evenly. You’d most likely need around 15 pumps to get that 2.7g of spf. So please don’t use your foundation as a substitute for spf, use it only in combination.

Tinted sunscreen is primarily a sunscreen function, foundation with some spf is primarily a foundation.

I would also consider comparing these alongside a mixture that you make yourself of a sunscreen and a foundation. Perhaps try different ratios too?

Try looking into Australia’s spfs instead of what’s popular in America- we have much stricter rules here surrounding sunscreen to make sure you get lots of protection, I recommend sunbum 50+ spf

It still surprises me how it's not common knowledge that the SPF from makeup is not enough for adequate sun protection, simply because you're supposed to apply way more sunscreen than you would foundation.

As long as it has UV filters (organic or mineral).. It is dose dependant Soooo You need to have 2-3 fingers of the product - whatever the product is - to get the labeled tested protection level!

The numbers and quantities of filters on a spf foundation which design for make up will never be as good as a produce in which it purpose is for block UV. Especially when we need not that much foundation for cover our skin while we need alot of sunscreen to protect it. Along with only like 15-25 spf on the foundation, we should be question more in the marketing tactics than the protection of a bottle of foundation

Most board certified Derms and esthies will not put their weight behind make up with spf in it. Whatever spf they do have is not broad spectrum enough to actually give you any protection. Best just wear a good priming, hydrating sun screen that wears well underneath make up. I’ll tend to change mine up if I’m im wearing foundation usually beauty of Joseon bc make sits so nicely on top of it

Could you try an spf powder next?? Like the one that comes in it’s own little collapsible brush? I’ve been seeing ads for them a lot recently but I just don’t see how they could be as effective as a lotion spf.

It’s because the sunscreen only has UV blocking ingredients… the foundation obviously has many many many different pigments mixed in, along with sunscreen, so it’s not going to look the same.

That's why apply spf even if the Tint or Foundation has Spf

Basically the spf content is diluted in foundation. You need at least two table spoon of foundation to get the claimed spf. So for 50spf claim - if you apply normal amount of foundation, you only get like 10spf worth.

Bear in mind those uv cameras aren't all informative, it doesn't directly inform you on sun blocking, not on how long it lasts, etc etc
