How to Damp Proof & Re-Plaster a Chimney Breast | Full Transformation

In today's video I'll be demonstrating how I damp proofed this chimney breast, transforming it from a damp eyesore to a tidy, moisture-resistant finish.

This project was part of a larger refurbishment, tackling issues like penetrating damp and condensation.

Watch as we strip away the old plaster, preparing the surface for damp proofing.

Using KA tanking slurry, I created an easy affordable, damp-proof membrane, ensuring moisture stays out for good.

Next, I add timber battens to fix the plasterboard away from the wall, minimizing condensation risks. The installation process is straightforward, and I share tips on achieving a professional finish.

Followin this, I added plasterboard, and skimmed the walls (a job I've never done before). Let me know if you think I did OK.

Finally, a few finishing touches, including a custom-built cabinet, decoration and a sleek new fireplace and the chimney breast is complete.

Whether you're tackling a similar project or simply interested in home improvement, I hope this video provides valuable insights and inspiration. Thanks for watching, and I'll catch you in the next one!

Nice job mate. I wonder if now that the moisture cannot go through the breast, will it expand on the side walls? Would it be better to just put treated battens without tanking and add a little air vent in there?

Very nice job indeed, should fix the damp issues no problem. Useful tip about the tanking slurry, I was not aware of that product. What fireplace is that if you don't mind me asking?

I am pretty handy and I am going to do something similar in a property I have bought, but plastering is a dark art so I booked a two day course also, hoping it works out 😂

I’m starting the exact same thing tomorrow & literally the same thing. What sort of price are you charging I think I’ve underpriced the job. I’m only doing the chimney 2.7 x 1.7 is the area

Would fixing the batons to the chimney breast with screws create holes for damp to get through? Thanks

I’m in America, Indiana to be specific. Where in the UK are you from ? I’m trying to pin down your accent. I’m going to guess the north near Scotland and I’m hearing what I think be Yorkshire mixed in ? Am I close at least? I enjoy your projects, good results. 👍

I’ve been thinking of doing something similar to my cellar. It’s quite damp down there but I just want to make it a bit more pleasant than now, not a ‘habitable room’. This looks like an affordable quick fix solution but this survive in a cellar?
