Come inside Elmer's Hamburgers, a Detroit neighborhood favorite since the 1950s

Elmer’s Hamburgers is one of the last old school slider restaurants in Detroit, although not as well known as some of the others.

It’s been a staple on West Chicago in Detroit since the 1950s, and is certainly loved by its westside neighborhood.

“I hear stories all the time from people who had their first date at Elmer’s, who met friends at Elmer’s ... the grill, the countertops, the stools, basically what you see, is how it was back in the 50s,” said Louis Smith, owner of Elmer’s Hamburgers.

You know it’s gonna be a good burger when it’s wrapped in that white paper 📄. Yum 🤤.

WOW WOW WOW. Here I am sitting in Los Angeles and here pops up this memory of home. I made a point to come to this burger place when I last visited home (Detroit). It tasted exactly the same as I remember. So glad that some things don't change.

Although they are some distance from me, i found me a new burger & fries joint when i feel the crave. I love to support our black on businesses. Every spring i go to the Garden Bug garden nursey on detroit west side. I skip english garden, home depot and all coming from Birmingham just to support black owned and you get great personal care, good garden tips and good plants.

Never had one but they look much better than White Castle. And the pride they take in preparing the burgers I take my hat off to all of them and I hope next time I am down that way I will swing by

I'm not sure if it's me but there's literally just this one burger place also in Detroit with the same building design and probably old too but instead of that it's actually called Sonny's hamburgers and it's actually right across the street from the Marathon gas station on Schoolcraft Rd

My family use to live on Cherrylawn/Schoolcraft and we would go there in the 50's, 60's & 70's. I LOVED the burgers and Chocolate Malts that they were also known for back so THICK. Thank you Mr. Lewis Smith for keeping Elmer's going. Next time I go back to Detroit, I will have to stop in and get a few if I lived closer would it is a long ways from Honolulu, HI. Sometimes after school (Mackenzie High) my sister Sandy and I, we would go there.
