About A FIRE INSIDE

As the world looked on in horror at Australia's apocalyptic bushfires, the selfless acts of everyday people defined the spirit of a nation but took an astounding toll of their own.

When a volunteer firefighter drives his car into almost certain death, during the worst fires in Australian history, he does it because he ‘has a job to do’. Three months later, the fires are out, but his fight is just beginning. Turning a sensitive lens on the unprecedented devastation of Australia’s 2019/2020 ‘Black Summer’ bushfires from a country - wide emergency to the astonishing stories of help that emerged, A FIRE INSIDE presents an inspirational look at the way
people respond to crisis and its true impact on the human spirit.

John Brogden Chairman of Lifeline, featured in A FIRE INSIDE
Soon after the 2019/2020 bushfires, Lifeline for the first time in their history set up a separate, dedicated hotline, specifically targeting Bushfire Recovery. Eighteen months later it was still receiving up to 300-400 calls a day. More people on average call in today than during the middle of the fires.
John is the Chairman of Lifeline, a position he’s held since 2012. After his own public battle with depression which led to a suicide attempt in 2005, John is acutely aware that mental health issues can affect anyone, no matter your standing in society. He is passionate about no Australian being alone in their time of need.

Lifeline is a national charity providing all Australians experiencing emotional distress with access to 24 hour crisis support and suicide prevention services. They are committed to empowering Australians to be suicide-safe through connection, compassion and hope. In 2014 John was made a member of the Order of Australia (AM) for significant service to the community.
