“Lay the table” is British and “set the table” is American but “SET the table” is more commonly used. However, they're both correct and I'm pretty sure they mean the same thing

As a native English speaker, I would say SET the table. I have never ever heard a native English speaker say 'lay' the table when referring to preparing the table for a meal.

In Greece 🇬🇷
We say : we put the table, too.

In Brazilian Portuguese we also say: por a mesa ;)

In french, the translation would also be "put the table" as it's "mettre la table"!

as a native English speaker (specifically american English, extra specifically the south) we usually say "set the table" :)
