Why Did This DSG Transmission FAIL?

The Direct-Shift Gearbox (DSG) transmission, developed by VW, traces its history back to the early 2000s when it was first introduced in the MK4 R32 in Europe. This transmission combines the efficiency of a manual transmission with the convenience of an automatic, DSG quickly gained popularity and became a benchmark for dual-clutch transmission technology in the automotive industry.

Today we tear apart the 6 Speed DSG Transmission out of our MK5 R32!

This Trans had problems being stuck in 2nd gear, would go into limp mode with the PRNDS lights flashing, had a loud clicking noise while idle, and had a nasty whine noise on deceleration. We had a feeling that our R32 would need a transmission, so we pulled this one out and saved it for this video! we wanted to tear apart this DSG to both see how these transmissions work and find the damage left behind!

It always amazes me the engineering complexity that goes into parts like this.

I used to work in a factory that produced the automatic transmissions. They had a model of the whole thing with parts exposed etc. Still blows my mind that all these individual gears work together so effortlessly

What I learned today is that when a Mommy Clutch, and a Daddy Clutch, love each other very much. They make a DCT.

I have a Skoda Yeti 4x4 with 6 speed wet clutch DSG. With 228, 000km (142, 000 miles) I have the oil changed as it's required in every 60, 000km (38, 000 miles). So far so good, I love it.

This was HILARIOUS!! Definitely need a drunk teardown series!

I've had a VW 6 spd manual in an MK8 GTI and recently a DSG in an MK8 R. The DSG is an amazing piece of engineering and as much as I love manuals, I feel the DSG is the proper transmission for the Golf R. As an $800 USD option it's a steal.

I remember taking one apart at school, to then cut some bits open, create a sort of exploded view, not really exploded view but I hope you get the point, and put it all back together, so the trans could be seen operating to teach new students about this type of transmission (We have also done a CVT and a regular auto aswell before that). Very interesting technique there and I did find it a lot of fun to do, I really enjoyed it....

I'm not an enthusiast but do like VW.
I bought a 2-year old Passat wagon not being excited about maintenance and complexity of the DSG. Found that I liked it and when I added a 2018 Golf to my fleet, I really noticed the difference between a standard auto and DSG.
Not sure my next car will be a VW but if so, I'll be wanting a DSG transmission for sure.

My dsg is going strong at 230k miles so far, it's been stage 2 or k04 for probably 12-13 years. Outlasted the first engine. I am on my second mechatronics though

I can't believe how well the clutch disks look for 200k

Taking into consideration how complex and fast DSG is, I would not complain on its reliability. My VW DUU manual gearbox stopped my car in an instant while on the second gear near the mall. I didn't know what happened. After few minutes it came back to life just to explode few days later (literally it made a hole in itself).

Hi I had a 2006 touareg V6 diesel. Towed a unic mini crane behind all over Ireland and the UK full towing limit. 534, 000 Kms, only replaced the air mass module and drive chain for fuel pump. Serviced ahead of schedule. Absolutely brilliant machine with dsg. Miss it. Ger in Ireland

I loved my 2014 VW cc dsg with a tune. Shifts were so fast and smooth. It would absolutely crack your neck when it downshifted and launched. Much smoother than these new auto transmissions constantly shifting 8+ gears before 55 with their clunking and lurching.

In my experience the box itself is fairly bulletproof, problems are 99% mechatronics related. Can often be fixed fairly cheaply too if you scan and find the faulty actuators which can be found on the web fairly easily. I've fixed a few liek this and never had a comeback on them.

Always enjoy the information provided in these videos. You guys are doing a public service. Showing the internals of something like this shed light on what a customer car is doing internally. Very interesting stuff. Good job Paul (and the crew )
