Evolution of Pit Stops in Gran Turismo (1997 - 2022 / GT1 - GT7)

Pit stops and tire wear have been a feature in the Gran Turismo series since the very first game, although for a long time they were mostly limited to endurance races. Here you can see what a pit stop looks like in every Gran Turismo game when pitting at the same time as the AI opponents.

Timeline:
0:00 Gran Turismo 1 - Pit Stop at Grand Valley
0:45 Gran Turismo 2 - Pit Stop at Laguna Seca
1:30 Gran Turismo 3 - Pit Stop at Tokyo R246
2:14 Gran Turismo 4 - Pit Stop at Suzuka
3:04 Gran Turismo 5 - Pit Stop at Nürburgring
4:09 Gran Turismo 6 - Pit Stop at Silverstone
5:10 Gran Turismo Sport - Pit Stop at Blue Moon Bay
6:08 Gran Turismo 7 - Pit Stop at Watkins Glen

In Gran Turismo 1 and 2 tire wear was only active in the endurance races but in GT3 it was used in a bunch of other events as well. Gran Turismo 4 introduced fuel usage and an actual pit crew animation during stops.

In GT 4-6 the refueling starts immediately but in GT Sport and GT7 it only begins after the tires are changed, so you can save time by not changing tires. As you can see in the GT7 clip Portilla enters the pit behind me but he leaves quite a bit earlier due to not changing tires.

I always put a lot of effort into these evolution videos and this one was no exception. I could have just recorded a quick stop after lap 1 in each game but instead I spent many more hours on this video, so that I could show you what it looks like when you stop together with the AI.

This actually revealed some interesting details. In GT2 you will ghost through the other cars as they are turning into their pit boxes but in GT3 you will crash into them, so you can actually lose a bit of time if you are entering the pit right behind someone.

In GT Sport and GT7 the other cars are hidden while in the pit lane, so you can respawn inside of another car if you exit the pit lane at the exact same time.

If you appreciate the work that I put into these videos and want to support them, then also check out these previous videos that went under the radar:

The jump from gt2 to gt3 is insane, especially when considering that it was 2001.

Considering the PS2 specs (300MHz, 32MB RAM), GT4 is unbelievable good. The dev team brings out the max of the PS2.

GT4 still looks great for it's time.

we went from levitating off the ground, to having full cutscenes. god i love seeing the progression of games throughout time

I really like the cutscenes that Sport and 7 have, but I wish they integrated it into reality instead of just phasing your car out of existence - it's a bit of a shame to have such nice driving just to have your car vanish into the pits and phase into another coming out. Bit weird.

I love that you used the Castrol Supra in every vid, such a gorgeous car and always fun to drive.

From GT4 to GT6 they give you the option to change the compound in either front and rear tyres. I don't know why they didn't do the same in GT Sport and GT7. I want to see that back

GT6 is underrated imo, it being just in the interior makes the pitstop feel longer and perfectly captures the dread of waiting for it to finish

The cinematic aspect from Sport and 7 I like, but just remove the teleporting from in to out and it'd be perfect. Still have a soft spot for the GT4 pit stops even though it's very obvious the wheels are not round.

Maybe it’s just me, but I prefer the older pit stops. GT4 was my favourite style. Watching your car go into the pits, seeing the pit crew from different angels change the tires and fuel, then seamlessly going back to the race.
The cutscene style in GT Sport and 7 just isn’t it. Plus in some tracks the transition is way to fast, and then others you are sitting waiting for 30 seconds.
But great video! Love the nostalgia trip with the older games!

Since GT Sport, this has become unrealistic, because when you go to the pit entrance, you are teleported near your mechanics and when they are finished, you are teleported again to the pit exit. And worst of all, you don't know where you are compared to the other drivers, you don't know if you passed someone in the pits or if you were passed by someone or if you successful your Over Cut or if the opponent's Under Cut worked

I will agree that GT4 felt way ahead of its time but GT5 is where the feeling was with the pit stops

If they combine the cinematic style of Sport/7, and make it the same way as Spa 24H in 7, but with no teleporting like 4, it'll be the best.

In Spa 24H in GT7, the cutscene lasts for a very long time.
