Expressing Your Opinion?

Fr. Mike says there are four things you should ask yourself before expressing your opinion: why, what, who, and how.

First, evaluate why you’re expressing this thought. Is it because it’s the right thing to do, or is it because you are trying to one-up someone?

Second, what is your opinion? Is it something true, like a principal, or is it just a preference?

Third, who are you talking to and what is your relationship to this person?

Lastly, how are you expressing yourself? Even if you are totally in the right, the way you say it is of the utmost importance in order for people to listen.

If you consider these questions when expressing your opinion or trying to correct someone, you’ll be much more likely to find a willing listener.

I have been doing a litany of humility for weeks now. I offer my opinion on everything! It's pride for me. It's been a painful road but I'm learning.

When expressing opinion ... if what is said isn’t rooted in love - it’s in vain/with a selfish agenda. Thank you, Fr. Mike, for sharing the Word in this challenging world.

Great video! I have found that people are so quick to ask for an opinion, because they want to classify others. Unfortunately this happens among some Catholics - classifying those as “good Catholics” or not.

Wise words, thanks. Some of the best advice I got in seminary was "You don't have to have an opinion about everything" - it means when you DO have an opinion it will be given more respect.

Another excellent video, Father, God bless
I think this is a good teaching in humility, we often have hubris and ego in our opinions

This is such a fantastic, timely message. If our society’s members had enough humility to just admit, “I don’t know enough and can’t make an opinion, ” there’d be so much more happiness and positivity.

Thank you for sharing your message and perspective, Fr.

I love this channel. This was a great message. Something I would like to hear more religious leaders talk about are the examples in scripture where the truth was spoken to confound and confuse people, not so that they would understand and come to a better relationship with God. Nobody seems to ever talk about that.

The whole thing about speaking truth to others was so needed. It was especially fitting for me today since the homily at daily mass was about speaking hard truths (cause today is the feast of the passion of John the Baptist)...but watching this was a nice tie in to that since...ya, we do need to do that, but we also have to access the situation and our motive. :)

This is a great reminder, Fr. Mike. I watched your interview with Matt Fradd recently, and you were incredibly charitable with your words. A previous guest of his was the complete opposite: he’s the sort to throw bombs at bulls in China shops. The key, as you said, is to speak truth in a way that the receiver will hear it, not to be as rude and gross as possible for the sake of vengeance. God bless!

Thanks Fr Mike one of the many good attributes of the Catholic Church today allowing others and there opinions to be heard, the Spirit gives patience, understanding, wisdom and love, turning opinions into a dialogue of truth so all have opportunity to be set free from there own acts of
self righteousness

This is so applicable for today. There was a friend who was talking about politics. At some point he asked, "Who do you support and back in the upcoming election?" I said, "nothing good comes from people discussing politics, especially if we do not agree. You were just talking about a celebrity you don't like anymore because of who they support politically." That is a whole different talk...celebrities who feel they can make an influence on public politically because of their celebrity. I will leave you with this... Opinions are like belly buttons, everyone has one. :)

A lot of people think that they are unassailably unbiased and logical. They're not. They're opinionated. And opinions are not facts.
