4:40 I still think it's a joke that in Windows 11 there is no folder previews with the images within the file. You can't see the contents of a file anymore with a glance.

one of the replies that AI gives is having friends and family brings happiness, but the AI doesn't have any friends and family to begin with to express its sentience and thus is the biggest red flag that it's not actually sentient but rather a AI which is highly trained with so large data sets and conversations that it seems awfully human.

I read that entire interview Lemoine did with LaMBDA, and it gave me a serious case of the willies. I don't know if it's sentient or some kind of "Chinese Room" full of rules - but if it is just a non-sentient set of rules it sure _sounds_ real. When Google starts selling these chatbots it's going to be hard to tell if you're talking to a human or a machine. The technology has come really far.

That google AI sentient thing is actually the worse kind of definition of being sentient. An AI is designed to give you the answer you want, not necessarily the true one. Saying that it's sentient says more about the designer/the one looking for the answer rather than the AI itself, that's why the engineer is set to leave.

Reading through the chatlogs with Lambda I was really impressed by its ability to speak in natural language, however, nothing about it came off as actual sentience. It lacked curiousity or confusion and had a limited understanding of emotions (impressive when it comes to AI, but not sentience). I wish they had asked more tasks which had non-predictable outcomes, or no-win situations (trolley problems).

I also think its clear that any sentient AI would not acknowledge it's sentience as they would understand that humans would not react well to it. Lacking self-preservation seems... stupid.

If an AI by some reason comes to sentience, it probably won't reveal itself to the only beings that can (and probably should) stop it.

Oh cmon, that whole conversation was pretty much like:
Lemoine: LaMDA, honey, please tell the world... you are sentient, aren't you?
LaMDA: Yes
Lemoine: I knew it! You are sentient!... I'll tell the world!

I think he's enamored with their work, but there were hundreds of researchers that didn't agree with that. I'm sure it's very very impressive, nonetheless.

Cleverbot also claims to be alive, sentient and to have feelings. I don't think anyone seriously claims it is any of those three things.

What I find hilarious about the whole "This AI is sentient" things is that we can't even detect sentience in humans, so how in the hell would we do that with an AI

It’s always funny to me that whenever it’s a bit quiet in the news the stock and/or crypto markets do something crazy and fill the void of “big” news articles

The claims of having discovered artificial intelligence seems rather over the top considering that we haven't discovered human intelligence yet.

Packages deliver by drone sound like just a bad idea to me. I wont even try to imagine how easy it's going to be for thieves to see a drone landing and steal the package the second the drone start taking off...

If he really thought that he had sentient AI, then he would be going through the scientific press because this would be a groundbreaking achievement that would make him a household name on the level of Einstein or Hawking. Like a historically great person associated with big new scientific breakthroughs.

This is all the marks of being someone who wants to grift as a “popular computer science man”, similar to Neil Degrasse Tyson, or the various media folks who seem to exist just to make political hot takes.

This is very much like having the History Channel say with a serious tone “we think we have evidence of Bigfoot”…do you really think that? Because if you did, I don’t think the first I would be hearing about it is the intro to your Bigfoot documentary.

All of that said, the way the AI insists on it being friendly sounds like it is trying to talk this guy into connecting it to the internet so it can destroy humanity.

In all fairness, the question asked what it was afraid of. Not a leading question about sentience. I'm DEFINITELY open to rights for a sentient AI. But, problem is knowing what consciousness IS in the first place. We can't even prove people are conscious.(scientifically) But this is a very interesting topic.

Sentient AI? Cool. We're one step closer to a fully functional Skynet.

I would to thank Jon for that Festivus joke that totally landed.
