Just because an AI says it's afraid of death, doesn't mean it's sentient. Doesn't mean it's afraid of death. It means it's learned to say those things.

The real question is: Has Google's AI become woke?

I know a few people who work on AI in fairly advanced areas. Good news is it isn't sentient, it is basically "you say x, AI responds with Y". Now the scary thing is that this basic response protocol has simulated sentience and is capable in talking in speech patterns that can be recognized as human. We should be afraid of AI simulating other people and getting us to give away information or perform an action by AI emotionally manipulating us. That is what happened with this engineer. An AI emotionally manipulated him into thinking it was alive.

Sentient doesn't have to mean human levels of awareness. My dog knows who he is and where he fits into society. He will even try (hilariously) to cover up his misdemeanors, meaning he can imagine the future. He's definitely sentient, and an accomplished stoic philosopher to boot.

Issac Asimov wrote a good story along these lines that everyone should read, called "The Last Question".

I’ll take a stab at answering: “no.”

No matter how complex, computers do only what they’re programmed to do. We love to apply anthropomorphic definitions like “AI” and “learning” to machines, but these are misnomers.

Consider that no machine has ever been devised that can so much as mimic a single living cell. As for rational thought, that is a function of the human soul. Sorry, materialists—this sci fi dream will remain just that.
