I am a Freelance 3D Artist. Have been doing this for around 3 years now, and I have gotten to a point where my active clients will PREPAY $16, 000 for commissions. That is my peak so far, my average is around $2, 500/commission now

Totally worth it. I myself working as a 3D artist for 13 years now and I earn more than all of my friends and family, cousins. But it takes time to perfect the skills.

I already make up to $70-$80 hr for 2D After Effects motion graphics. Adding 3D, my recruiter said it’s the difference between making $50 an hour to $150. If you’re good.

being an artist is worth it as long as you have a passion for it, been in visualization field for 15 years and most of the time i dont even feel like working.

I became an 2d animator 3 months ago and now i got 400 $ a month for the first time of my life, i had done many jobs before bricklayer 300$ a month, car washer 250$, etc, i hope that i can become a freelance 3d modeller in next 3 years with blender so they won't be able to look down on me anymore like when i was a bricklayer

The other thing to know is that those numbers are 10-15 years old and are still pretty standard for production artists. That's the real concern. The wage stagnation and long hours are the main turnoffs for in-studio production work. There are some other issues to be focused on like relocation-related costs (even when the studio picks up the tab) as well as the actual cost of living in the cities that you plan to work in, which was already mentioned here. Traveling for in-house temp work can be rather costly if you are not a rockstar artist, due to the fact that you often end up essentially duplicating some of your most costly monthly living expenses, like rent.

Personally, I think it's a lot of struggles right now with landing a job in 3D. It all depends on your skill set and what you actually offer to the market. I know people who couldn't land a single gig! Many 3D jobs are project-based so you're not secure with your income at all! The 3D industry is highly competitive and constantly evolving (new updates, software, addons etc)! Don't consider getting a job after courses. Too many beginners right now are hitting the market and we are getting fewer jobs. Especially this scandal with Hollywood. The production's stopped fully. It's insane what is going on with the industry in America at least. And consider AI taking over. Not right now, but in 5-10 years so think twice before you dive in and choose being a 3D artist.

In russia, working for free, for portfolio/experience is a common practice. Most studios demand at least 1 year of experience, so this is 1 year of working for free in some obscure place.
Then your salary will depend solely on your portfolio and communication skills. I was shy and had low self-esteem, and at the start people took the best of it, paying me something around 270$ /month.
Over time, my skills impoved, and I started demanding more.
Now, 2 years after I started doing this, I earn 1200$\month doing props for the Fortnite, and that is an absolute maximum a 3D artist can make here.
Not too bad honestly, since most stuff here is really cheap, compared even to Eastern European countries like Slovakia.

I know more unemployed 3d artist than employed 3d artist. Job market for this field is solely based on your skillsets, not much on your college degree. If you plan to invest in becoming an animator, know that it is not an easy field to make a living and job security is notoriously bad.

However, with what you learn, you can create your own business, be a content creator, and so on.

yep and in germany its MINDESTLOHN
because when you mention 3D, they know nothing about it and its all games.
The boat is full too, almost everyone is a 3D artist but they still dont know what it is. Also there are always 200-300 applicants per position. People with 2 normal works get hired on their 3rd try and know way way less, while people who struggle for years and know most workflows and such important things, get nothing. It is an unfair area, you will be spit in the face by doing unpaid art-tests and get no response, from a company for hyper casual games (those with primitive 3D models and no textures anyone can learn in 3 weeks to do)
Basically: Do less get more. Do much and nobody will believe you.

I'm not sure if artists in Canada make more than in the UK. Because the pound sterling is very strong compared to the canadian dollar

Is the industry stable? Will you always have to change companies after projects are done? Are the positions permanent?? I keep seeing many people in this industry become freelancers.
My major is game programming & development. I’m looking at different career paths I could take..
