"anything you say may be used in evidence" means we will twist whatever you say to make you appear guilty of anything we feel like

You do not have to say anything but: 'heads we win, tails you lose'.

So essentially you’re damned if you do and you’re damned if you don’t. So make sure you behave yourself and if you can’t, don’t get caught!!! 😂

After you're read your rights say... "Ow, ouch, stop beating me".

We really do live in a dystopian nightmare.

The most important part of that is you don't have to say anything . So be silent.

BBB, is conviction by corruption, followed by being refused leave to Appeal, legally permitted in Britain?

It's different here in the US, here you are advised to say nothing because anything you say can be used against you. They can't use your silence against you.

Thankfully up here in civilisation, there is the right to absolute silence, and no negative inference maybe drawn.

There was something in The Times. "Legal section" years ago as a response to the "new caution."
"I do not fully understand what you have just said. I will decide if I wish to answer any questions once it has been explained to me by my lawyer, and you tell me in his presence what you think I have done wrong. In the meantime, I will give you my name and address but will not answer any questions. Please write down what I have just said."

This is why I have a barrister. They can ask me all the questions they want at the station.

Funny how no matter what you do is used against you.
Not that i support criminals and such, but weird how the "justice" system is all about a legal battle and not about justice. Aka, bringing criminal to justice or protecting an innocent man from injustice (remember that innocent fellow that spent 17 years in prison)
Damned if you do
Damned if you don't

"It " MAY" Harm your defence...
The police and those in "power" won't dare say it "WILL" Harm your defence.
You may be find x amount etc
They never say, "you will be fined, , it" will" be used, etc. Only may.

If you're in for questioning, lawyer up. If you then refuse a question you can blame your solicitor ("on my solicitors advice I decline to answer that question") - then you have a fairly good reason for not having mentioned something you later rely on in court.

I got charged for going no comment as the police didn't even have a statement about what I was suspected of doing, , in interview they just asked what can you tell me about what's happened, , my solicitor said go no comment as I didn't have a clue nor did they what they were on about, ,
Its a right scam

What I wanna know is- say you’ve committed the crime but plead not guilty, do you confess to your lawyer and let him lie or do they have an obligation to be truthful?

at the interrogation you elect to remain silent but state you will provide written answers to the questions at the end of the interview, this will drag out the process and hurry the police to charge you or let you go while they work out whats going on

Not in the chilly North, thank goodness.

I'm not a lawyer.
However I would probably wait until I had representation. I wouldn't know what they had been told or the assumptions they are working under. Also some officers are not that concerned or even capable of actually understanding the background or circumstances of an event.

Additionally, I believe (please correct me if I'm wrong) that officers do not have to / are not required to state in court what you said. If that is true, then I don't see how saying anything at that juncture would / could help.

I would wait until I've spoken to counsel and then explain the situation on the record in an interview which is recorded.
