As I understand it, sql server can keep statistics on columns that aren't mentioned in any index of a given table. If that is the case and I rebuild the indexes of the table, does that necessarily update statistics built for columns that aren't mentioned in any index?

Has anybody let you know that there is an error in your script? When you add the red backed 2 you say "four" but there are actually 5. You might want to correct that in some way?

Nice explanation as usual. Which SQL Server version did you use please? I don't get 1 for the estimated number of rows after the 2 columns indexes are created on SQL 2014.
