High Magick Vs Sorcery [Esoteric Saturdays]

After mentioning that the conversation on the Left Hand Path is (almost) unrelated to the conversation on High Magick Vs. Sorcery in a previous video, I explain here what I mean by that.

Newcommers to the domain are often confused by the distinctions that are made and where the seemingly petty in-fighting actually originates.

In this video I explain that these are two distinct domains, which can be and have been combined to great effect, but we now have access to enough information that we can educate ourselves on the origins and originally intended uses of the various practices, and not fall into the issue of unintentional and/or clumsy appropriation.

I went through the curriculum in Modern Magick which starts with six months of theurgy before switching to practical magic in the second half. When I started I was most excited for that second half but when I got there I found I really loved theurgy and didn't really have an interest in the sorcery side anymore. The work I had been doing in the Temple helped address a lot of my deep-seated issues and now I'm a much more functional human being. I was just very happy with the life I had managed to build for myself and I didn't feel the need to try and muck it up asking for things I didn't really need or want. I ended up switching to the LTC self-initiation curriculum a little over a year ago and it's been great. It's been exactly what I needed at this point in my life.

In my experience, so much of high magick mindset, if viewed from ego, is “get rid of the ego, so one doesn’t suffer anymore / is closer to the HS, etc / can be clean in front of (as Lon Milo Duquette puts it) The Great G.” An important distinction is that the ego will be present in both high and low magick, as its use and function is relevant in both. Treating the ego like Lucius Malfoy treats his house elf ends with a murderous companion, and a sidetracked master. This addition of the ego instead of its displacement is beneficial for the growth of the practitioner, and for the integration of the ego, not to mention the downright necessity for having and embodying the ego.

So this has us arrive at ego based working. Low Magick. That which would seem antithetical to high magick’s great work, would, in reality, just naturally be a part of it. If I manifest a beautiful experience with an angel, I am transmuted by the experience. If I manifest a pound of gummiworms and the appetite to eat them in one sitting, god knows I will be transmuted, mainly while in the bathroom, promising God I’ll never eat that many gummiworms, but there’s the rub.

There’s a great comedy afoot, involving a great many people making fuss about ego. What would even stop to spend time belaboring the ego? What pays attention to it that much? Would the observer of the ego, in this case, not be mantling the position of the ego? The humor being the figurative Great G’s response “A for effort, you shifty clever thing, you. You’re still going to school.”

Its an easy ego trap. High team, or low team. But still, if you didn’t fall into mud, how would you know to avoid mud puddles when you’re out and about? The crux of the contention about all this is a wonderful teacher.

It’s interesting to see how this distinction is pretty similar to Greek one of Goetia vs Theurgy. I have a feeling it’s probably comes down via that dichotomy into modern practice. The goes performs magick for the benefit of desire (usually material), but it’s literal translation is “juggler”. Its etymology is pretty interesting in that it seems related to γόος which was a kind of funerary lament that was emotional/evocative. There’s also that distinction between μαγεία and goetia, since even Gorgias refers to them both as “sins of the soul” given they get confused. Given that the μάγος and goes got conflated, it seems that material sorcery got associated with those kind of wandering mendicant types who ripped people off. While Dr Skinner argues that theurgy is ultimately a descendant of the Mystery Traditions, I think there’s an equal argument we could say that the Neoplatonists developed it almost as a reaction to the “impious” form of magick and divine communication of goetia that they perceived, and it was therefore seen as an almost “proper” way of dealing with the divine (especially since they held that similar gnostic belief of humans being sparks or fires of divinity). Super interesting video!

Thank you for this consise explanation! For me, exploring explicit concepts of magic is still quite new. What I think is also interesting in this context is how concepts of “high” and “low” have developed historically. There is a very intelligent, deeply researched book called “North: The Rise and Fall of the Polar Cosmos” by Gyrus on this subject. A main idea here: Cosmologies based on polar opposites (North vs. South; high vs. low realms of the world; the image of an axis mundi or the World Tree of the shamans; head vs. lower parts of the body etc.), do not necessarily reflect the most ancient perceptions of the world, but have evolved over time. They have also been connected with political concepts. And, I quote, “when the Copernican Revolution shattered the idea of Earth as the centre of everything, shards of this polar cosmos fell down, seeding strange fantasies, haunting our modern world with remnants of celestial dreams”.

I've always associated "Low Magick" with using of Herbs, Crystals, Candles, Poppets, and a lot of Working with Physical and Natural Elements - and Yes as a practical "Manifestation" Work. And High Magick is all done 'in the Body of Light' in Astral realm, although you definitely do it in the physical world with Tools too - but Yes, to ultimately 'Complete the Great Work' and reach an Apotheosis/Enlightenment "Higher Consciousness".

I find it interesting that some schools of Buddhism adopt a pragmatic approach to magic, insofar as they have amulets for finding a partner or creating wealth, but since they believe in rebirth, there is an assumption that eventually the wearer will adopt, over many lifetimes a more spiritual approach to life.
