Learn to stop on inline skates to help your progression and confidence - STOP to GO on rollerblades

Learning to stop on inline skates is a vital part of becoming a confident skater. In this video I will discuss why I think it is so important to learn.

For me learning to stop was the key to my progression. Once I had some basic slowing and stopping techniques it gave me the confidence to try new things on my skates knowing that I could control myself and stop when needed.

Here is a link to my 'How to stop tutorial'. Here I cover the drag stop, basic powerstop and powerslide:

“Never go faster than you can stop” was good advice given to me long ago

Stopping was the first thing I learned when I got back into skating a few months ago. Really didn't want to hit the streets without feeling like I couldn't stop whenever I wanted. I'm still working on stopping to this day even tho I have a number of effective emergency stops now.

I have just started skating again and I totally agree!!! Learning to stop is sooo important and now that you mention it, that is exactly what’s making me soo doubtful when skating and makes me so afraid because I havent learned hot to power stop yet .. and slowing down is not doing the thing.. sometimes you need to drastically stop! So I have watched your tutorial and WOW! So perfectly explained! Congratulations on that! Please keep uploading more stuff like this! Soooo helpful! Thank you soo much!

The power stop can be significantly improve by repeating those on different surfaces.
This will not only expose your flaws but also allows the body itself to ultimately mastering it by self adapting to those various textures.

It’s great to see someone in the UK skating on YouTube! We have so much more Hostile Architecture on our city streets it can be really hard to get a good flowing skate. Keep up the the good work!

The best advice that i’ve got in my 3 months journey of inline skating. Practicing on how stop made me more confident to try new skills. Your how to stop tutorial was my practice guide in my first month. Thank you!

Much truth in this video! Beginners NEEED to understand just how important it is to have a few strong stopping techniques for different situations. Everyone wants to go fast, but you should never do it until you know how to stop! Great work, WHITTY!

Couldn't agree more. I recently moved into a 4x100 setup and the speed is really testing what I thought was decent stopping technique.

Your stopping tutorial for beginner is hands down the best one online, since it covers progressions. I as a beginner how is still practicing basics in controlled environment, would love to see from you detail tutorial with progressions how to skate backwards, and how to achieve better edge control (like, what would be your drills). After that how to even dominant and non dominant leg/side.

Drag stop can be learned in just couple of minutes but powerstop is very hard so please give us few exercises to make powerstop easy

Once again, thanks for this great video! =) Somehow in my original research, I missed that the ‘power stop’ is considered slightly more advanced (lol) so I inadvertently started practicing that early on, and have become surprisingly proficient in my ‘dominant direction’, but still quite horrible in the opposite direction. ;) I’m getting close to venturing out of the parking lot and onto a local trail, thanks in large part to your really great videos! =) I love your inspiring tone, that we just gently need to keep working at it, and soon enough we’ll be doing quite well! =)

Hi Whittyskater, one thing I have problems with after getting back to skating is developing a good forward stride—in other words the forward motion itself (I think this is also a very noticeable development in your 2 year progress video). It is tempting to point your feet outwards rather than pushing of sideways and keeping your toes pointed forward. Could you describe the correct technique? Maybe a video on a correct forward motion would help a lot of your viewers. As always: great content and thank you for your videos; which helped me a lot and genuinely got me into rollerblading again.
