Respectfully and with ettiquete;

false interpretation of "one must imagine sisyphus happy".

the point of mentioning sisyphus being happy is he only has ONE pointless annoying task forever. everyone else has many. it's the same, rigid path.

Tantalus just sucks in every aspect, never being able to fully reach their goals no matter what path they take.

Im agreeing with OP, for the record.

My philosophy pet peeve is that this still falls in line with what Camus meant when he said one must imagine Sisyphus happy

That's why we have the word *'Tantalizing'*

I think it comes from the fact Sisyphus managed to very almost get the boulder to the top before it rolls down again so people not only remember the pointless task but also the almost getting it then not bit and that’s why they say that

I am tantalus in my life. I would get amazing opportunities and then some ridiculous thing out of my control happens and I lose it. (Like my grant that would have allowed me to get a masters without paying anything and even getting a stipend for my daily expenses and rent. And then got into a car accident and got severe ptsd and was kicked out)

The thing to remember about the quote is that it comes from a philosophical essay about the absurdity of life, specifically about how we try to make it meaningful when the universe doesn't give us an answer. The quote is how even if all we do is "meaningless" tasks in comparison to the universe, we should still strive to make ourselves happy. It isn't about not getting a reward or mythology really, it's about dealing with existentialism

One must imagine Prometheus happy.
Holding up the earth forever must be an awful ordeal.

My Mythology pet peeve is that people don't learn just *HOW* Sisyphis and Tantalus *got there in the first place*

Sisyphis was a tyrant who would order the deaths of emissaries to his palace as a flex. The reason why it angered the Gods was that it was a gross violation of hospitality, which was so important, it was sacred.

In the case of Tantalus, what he did was *WAY WORSE*
He invited the Gods to a feast in their honor, as they made their way to the table, Tantalus spilled the tea about the Gods right in front of them and for the meal, Tantalus killed his son and had it cooked and served to the Gods. But the Gods knew what the meat really was and were rightly repulsed!

My mythology pet peeve is confidently reciting a version of a myth whose first attestation is CENTURIES younger than the civilization it's credited to. Like, absolutely no legitimately Ancient Greek person would know wtf you were talking about if you mentioned Medusa used to be a priestess of Athena!

I mean yeah that’s where the phrase “tantalizingly close” comes from probably

My pet peeve is people comparing mythology to internet memes. Inb4 "they actually *are* similar"

for some reason i misread the title and thought it said theseus so let me give you a fun fact about that
the wikipedia article for ship of theseus has been slowly modified over the years and now is 100% different from its original version becoming a ship of theseus of its own
really cool!

These are literally just two ways of viewing the same thing

I see people comparing Sisyphus' story to everything under the sun and even though it shouldn't, it really annoys me. People just parrot whatever they see online without actually taking the time to understand what it means, though that's more of a general complaint than being about the Sisyphus thing specifically.

Also, lol'd at the syphilis joke

how often does the scenario happen? like, if this was an amusing anecdote i'd be like, haha go it

but this poster says this happens enough to be a pet peeve, in which case i want some goddamn numbers

But the meme is from an article claiming that sisyphus has in his own weird way life solved. That "one must imagine him happy", which is ridiculous because op states he is forced for eternity to do 1 simple task and never reach his goal

Your pet peeve is the point
