Laparoscopic surgery is better than open hernia surgery for two reasons basically one reason is that you don’t make any surgical cut. So all benefits of Laparoscopic surgery like minimal invasion and minimal dissection and minimal handling of the tissues and minimum cut and maximum mobility and quick mobility.These are the reasons for laparoscopic surgical advantages. But another big advantage of Laparoscopic surgeries is that they repair that we do laparoscopically along with the anatomic repair, we also do a mesh placement intraabdominally. So in open surgery the mesh is placed only. Whereas in laparoscopic surgery, the mesh is placed in, that is the mesh is placed inside the abdominal wall. So it is a special mesh that goes there and does not touch the bowel content or does not cause adhesions with the bowel contents in the abdomen. In open surgery the mesh is placed outside, patient needs to have a drain mostly for 3 to 4 days and immobilization for 3 to 4 days and patient needs to stay in the hospital for 2 to 3 days and there are lot of disadvantages in open surgery. So if laparoscopic surgery can be done is always better than open surgery for hernias.
