This made an entire story unwind in my head. Instead of a runaway Princess, though, she's the lost heir of sorts--a bastard child legitimized shortly before the King was assassinated and all his natural-born children were taken out with him. The Knight has come to convince the lost heir to take the throne, because the only other option is the line dies out and the Kingdom falls into chaos as more distant royal lines fight over the throne.
The Knight tries to convince the Heir that it'll be a better life, a luxurious one, with power. However, what the Knight doesn't realize is the Heir may have had a miserable childhood growing up on the streets... but she fought tooth and nail to gain her own power, and now she's the Queen of the underground, the Thief Lord. She's not trapped. She's made her own throne out of blood and sweat and fire and she won't give that up to be restrained by the protocols of Court.
The Knight continues trying to convince her. The Knight falls in love with the Heir and has a moral crisis over loving someone who is willing to allow the kingdom to fall when she has a chance to stop it. But... in the end, the Heir convinces the Knight to leave the Court, instead.
Then they're the Queen of the Underground and her Lady Knight of the Shadows.
