As a professional French polisher, I can tell you this is one of the better how do videos, this guy does at least have the knowledge to back up what he’s talking about and he was pretty much spot on with his procedures, although I would do any paint stripping before I started sanding. Having said that my advice is on old pine stair treads would be use carpet! They are just such a pain to do, this guy has made it look easy, it’s not.

All bases completely covered. I’ve done a couple staircases and many hours of research on techniques and they are all covered here. Stop here and follow this vid and you’re good.

One thing I needed was after using dampness to bring out the grain, before staining use a water based pre stain wood conditioner. This will make sure your wood looks consistent and not blotchy. It’s cheap and you will regret not using it if one of your stairs absorbs inconsistently. Learn from my mistake!

Great video! Question : I have a similar staircase but with 15 risers. I was wondering if it would be possible to remove the treads and refinish them in my workshop? But I’m worried I might damage them when I remove them. 1960s house.

Great video. If you have an oscillating tool, those little sander blades you can buy are amazing for getting in nooks and crannies.
