Junk PSP Restoration - Sony Playstation Portable 1000

Sony (PSP) Playstation Portable 1000 Restoration. In this video I will restore and repair the first version of Sony PSP. The console came to me as part of lot of old consoles. It's dirty, the buttons are yellowed, it makes a horrible noise when I try to play a game and the circle button need to be pressed really hard.

If you are interested in buying some the product, you get a discount with code JSOT15

To remove the yellowing I use a technique called retrobrighting. It uses UV-lights and Hydrogen peroxide to remove yellowing from plastic.

To fix the noise I used oil to lubricate the gear that was making the noise. Oil is safe for electronics. However because the laser lens is near the gear you need to be careful because oil on the lens will probably cause it not to red the UMD properly

released in 2005, still looks sleek and futuristic

The sound of the disk running. The booting sound. The looks of this console. Oh, the nostalgia 😭

The disk system for this was genius. Keeping the disks inside the casing meant there was less risk of scratches meaning the disks lasted longer. Massive reduction in risk of damage from playing it.

Hearing the start screen just gave me a wave of nostalgia

This man only loves three things: repairing consoles, the ducktor and isopropyl alcohol

Man, I can’t express how much I loved that handheld. So many memories. And the potential it has especially with mods. Truly one of a kind and ahead of it’s time!

I'm so happy there are people out here doing this. We don't want to lose these pieces of history

I love the amount of effort that went into restoring it completely. Not just a deyellowing and a clean but sanding and painting the chrome back on. I'd buy a used psp that was done like this or other consoles if they were given this much love and effort to be cleaned and restored to this level.

I can’t comprehend how you can remember where all screws and all tiny plastic things where at the beginning when you took everything apart. That is just amazing. Wow.

You probably already know this, but something that may help all the buttons work better, is to pop out the rubber membrane. Take a piece of printer paper and gently rub the black pads in a circular motion on the paper, one at a time. Using the paper as a very fine abrasive, it can help restore the conductivity of the pads.

I learned this from either you, or RetroGameTech, not sure which. Wanted to bring it up just in case you didn't know. Awesome job on the Resto!

I just restored one myself! Bought it for 9$ and got it all cleaned up and working again! Amazing piece of tech for its age

What baffles me, is how you remember where each piece, screw, everything goes. Its very impressive. I really enjoy watching these.

Wow. Just watching you take the PSP apart just shows how much work went into the invention of this handheld.

Thanks for this. The PSP was an amazing release. Not only did we have PS2-quality games portable, but this thing could also play movies, browse the internet, run IRC and emulate just about anything from the previous generation. It looked, felt and was so futuristic.

Well engineered mini console, multiple screws and parts and you made it look so easy disassembling and restoring every last piece, great job

I’ve owned damn near every gaming console known to man and never once has any of them been in the shape you find these in. Good god

Seven minutes in, and I'm already thinking, "Sweet baby Jesus, this thing is going to be AWFUL to reassemble." The amount of fiddley-ness for disassembly is off the scale. I tip my hat to you, sir, for undertaking this task!

I didn't realize the PSP would be such a complex breakdown. Lots of screws and ribbon cables, more than some full-size systems actually. Nice work man.

It had one of the best joysticks I've ever touched. Truly a device worth remembering.
Oh yes, and a large game library, that too.

How do people even come up with this? So intricately done, especially for something done in 2005. I can't imagine what it must look like in 2021 and how long it would take to learn how to develop the technology in theory, let alone practically
