i agree, only reason i got an awd subaru forester was because i have a place on a dirt road for snowmobiling in the winter than you really need either 4wd or awd to get to, and i thought the forester was a good deal!

I live where we get harsh winters and considerable snow, I HAVE to get to and from work, my Forester with Blizzak snowshoes hasn't let me down, yeah the mpg isn't great but I can't afford a car for each season

The AWD is also a safety feature, I’ll pay the weekly “Protection Money” at the pump!

Scotty: My 2020 Honda Ridgeline AWD defaults to front wheel drive. Only transfers to AWD when the Ridgeline senses the need.

Just got a 2022 Equinox LT AWD for my wife. It has AWD, but it's selectable. So she can run in FWD or go to AWD by pressing a button. Pretty cool. And the reason for AWD for her car is because we live on a dirt road, and the AWD helps out on paved roads when wet, and on our mud pit of a road when it's wet. When in AWD, it only gets 1 MPG less than FWD, so not really an issue leaving it in AWD all the time.

If it’s a truck 4x4 minimum, everything else AWD drive. It’s safer and worth the money. Saving money is not always the solution.

All wheel drive means that you got to always replace all 4 🛞 tires at once too everytime you need a new tire

Easy to say when you’re in the southern US. If you live in a northern climate with harsh winters, steer clear (no pun intended) of RWD, you can get by with a FWD if you put good rubber on, but choose AWD or 4x4 if you can. Carefully choose your tires as well. I was using the TOYO Open Country All Terrains on my Ram Rebel and switched to the Goodyear ATs and the Goodyear far outperforms the Toyos.

I once had a 4 wheel drive truck but got out of it when I realized the only time I used it was when traffic stopped on freeway and I cut across the median to avoid the traffic jam

I will never buy rear, 4 or all wheel drive. Two short axles performing all of the work. I have a 4WD. I live in Michigan. In the last 4 years I have owned it, I had 4 wheel drive engaged 10 minutes.

Been driving for 50+ years, never had a 4-wheel drive, never had an all-wheel drive. Live in an area that gets a lot of snow, depended on my driving skills, and they never let me down. Plus, always have good tires.

My VW Atlas (AWD) is normally in front wheel drive only but switches on the rear wheel drive when needed (which is not offen). I agree that after driving for 45 years, 99% of the time I have not needed 4x4 or all wheel drive but that 1% of the time I couldn’t live without it. So my daily driver is a 1983 Mercedes 300d and my other car is the 2018 Atlas SEL loaded.

For the folks who encounter snow AWD/4x4 is a must even if it's for 3-4 months a year. The feeling of knowing you have a chance & might not get stuck? That alone is worth the expense 4x over

Wish my accord was AWD or had the option. Winters here get pretty bad sometimes and they don’t usually plow our roads in the country. Front wheel drive gets sketchy

I'm shocked that Scotty doesn't understand AWD. AWD never turns more than 2 wheels at a time. Damn!

My Subaru Outback had AWD. 2016 model with eyesight. Drove it for 5 years with not a single problem. 3 kids, 3 dogs, single mom. Commuting 90 miles a day at some points during their HS years. It was perfect. Great mileage. And it was our only car.

Unless you live in the Great North snow belt area in Ohio, then a four-by-four or all-wheel drive would be a good decision

I prefer 4 wheel drive to turn on only when it is necessary.
