Human didn't start the war, the Forerunners knew of the mantle same as the humans and the forerunners were even more advanced and when the forerunners found out the mantle wasn't being given to them they got pissed and started the war with humanity and then wiped put tye precursors after the eon in the dust form the precursors actually tried to pit themselves back together but since they were corrupted they never came back the same and thus became the flood

From what I read (take this with a large grain of salt), one of the forerunner worlds was taken over by the flood and the humans attacked it to purify the flood. Due to a misunderstanding the forerunners thought humanity attacked and only realized they were mistaken after they had de-evolved humanity

I’m pretty sure that the Precursors needed some special sand for their regenerative dust transformation process, but the planet with the dust was taken over by the Forerunners, so they found a new one. But there was a small amount of some kind of weird acid in the sand, which corrupted the process

Its crazy to think that the ancient human civilization would've probably beaten the forerunners, if it wasnt for the fact that they were fighting the flood at the same time and prior to the start of the war with the forerunners, if it wasnt for them being worn down and dramaticly weaken by their efforts to beat back the flood, then they wouldve probably won the war, but tbh honestly if it wasnt for the flood incursions into the border space between humanity and forerunner empires, the war between the two wouldn't have probably started at all, cause the two empires were trying to avoid each other

Just realized something. The Precursors frame the Flood as a test, however they chose humanity as their heirs before testing the Forerunners woth a Flood outbreak. So either the Precursors knew they would get betrayed and planned this grand theater, or the Precursors changed their selection protocol during or after their betrayal by the Forerunners, this adds depth to the cosmic horror.
