Scriabin's Etude in D#m Op.8 No.12
Vladimir Horowitz, 1982

I know many find Horowitz's 60s recordings of this piece superior, but I prefer Horowitz' rendering of the middle section and the penultimate jackhammer-like section in this recording.

No matter how many mistakes are there, this interpretation is by far the best.

Horowitz took this piece of music to another level. He knew how to capture the soul with the piano.

The way Horowitz plays it gives me goosebumps.
1. The constant momentum he has with his left hand. The piece is always like a current with each wave pushing the music forward and the music never settles. The way he pushes the piece forward constantly is amazing.
2. The buildup is amazing. Everything builds up to a climax and then settles down a bit but never dies down.

This is one of my favorite short pieces for the piano and I love the way Horowitz performed it, he is the best.

I've been watching funny harmless pranks non stop for an hour or so, laughing at the reactions. Then I see this on my recommend.. I instantly realised I have not listened to this recording of Horowitz before (there's another one that's really famous) and now I find myself crying... Powerful isn't it?

Scriabin was the true genius; Horowitz was the messenger.

Something about Horowitz that is epitomized in this etude. He knew Scriabin and played for him as a child.

The part from 0:48 to 1:30 is in my opinion the most beautiful thing ever written in the history of piano classical music

The Brazilian composer Jorge Antunes used this etude on the final moments of a piece he wroted for Scriabin's 100th anniversary. Jorge's piece is called "Scryabinia MCMLXXII". Pretty interesting work, with touches of Penderecki's Threnody even.

The legato of this aweful left hand is quite extraordinary, while the expressivity of the right hand is so beautiful...both melodic and rythmic.

This was still a wonderful performance. Horowitz was so exceptionally gifted and unique. If he played like this when he was over medicated and suffering in so many ways. The man was a genius !!!!

Thank you so much, rmannion, for posting the score.
Thanks to you, I have discovered notes I never before discerned.
Wonderful.

I like Horowitz as opposed to many other pianists because instead of bothering me with things that could be expressively improved like many other pianists, he shocks me with new interpretive details that no one else does that also sound spectacular.

As I watch the music go by I get it. The choices he makes are incredible, the phrasing and sudden dynamics and importance of each note and how that note fits in the whole, makes this the most genius interpretation.

I prefer this particular Horowitz account of Scriabin's demonic Etude to his earlier recordings. Here he judges the accumulative drama perfectly, the tumultuous closing bars are thrillingly played.
