Had the same surgery 15 years ago, c5, 6, 7 was the best thing I did . I was contemplating suicide because the pain was so intense it was ruining my life .The surgery was 9 hrs long, one night stay at the hospital it’s young 42years old and in good health no complications at all, could not feel under my chin for almost a year carful shaving, was given cadaver bone graft which worked fine . You have to learn to walk again using a walker and could not lift anything over 5 lbs for 1 month. You will need help getting things done it is a long road but one I would do again . I at first thought it did not work but didn’t realize the amount of time my body needed to heal almost one year still saved my life ! And good luck to anyone else doing it.

I had C5-C6 done in 2019. At the time C6-C7 was showing signs of herniation as well but we (doctor and I) decided to leave the 6-7 alone. Now on May 13, 2024 i had to have 6-7 done. The doctor temoved the titanium plate over 5-6, removed the disc between 6-7, installed cadaver bone, then put a plate over 5-6-7. So far (two days post op) i feel sore, but the pain meds control it. I plan to be back to working from home next week. Back to driving a couple weeks after that.
If it goes like my firat surgery, i wont have any issues except the slight range of motion reduction.
I put the surgery off for 11 years for the first one. The doctor told me “you will know when it’s time”. The “time” came when i began experiencing loss of strength in my arm. If the only issue was pain, i would probably still be dealing with it because it wasn’t debilitating pain.

I had this surgery (only 1 level) 4 years ago; didnt had any pain at all they used a small piece of my hip bone, which I was told that could hurt a little bit for the first days. Surgery is only recommended when you have neurological deficits or pain that is unbearable and doesnt shows signs of improving after 6 months and having an injection. Having said this, this type of surgery has high success rates and very little associated complications.

I am studying for an exam over the ACDF. Yours is the most true to the literature.

I had this surgery on 3 levels 2 years ago and still have numbness in my left hand and fingers. My doctor passed away and was forced into retirement soon after my operation. I have no coverage or money for therapy. I also had to rehab 3 other herniated discs in my thoracic spine. I'm stuck, I can't work or do anything anymore and just feel like a bag of bones. I've also had both of my legs operated on with anterior compartment syndrome.

I had this in 2007. The dr recommended I get the donor bone graft. What I didn’t know is that works to actually graft to your own bone just 25 % of the time. It took 6 months to heal or graft but then I felt so much pain I went back in the did an MRI and found one of the screws was 1/2 way out and another one broke off! Emergency surgery to clean out the donor bone and this time he took it from my hip.this graft worked.
It was the most painful surgery I’ve ever experienced. I was in hospital for three days each time. Afterward I had soft tissue pain for which there is no medication for. I went to a WONDERFUL sports medicine Chiropractor who performed the Grayson technique on me which saved my life from the chronic pain I had been experiencing.

I'm dying to know if this is the exact surgery I am going to have. I just reached out to my neurosurgeon for clarification, but if it is, I was told the recovery was one week, pain is managed by only Tylenol, and it's basically an outpatient procedure.

I’m scheduled for a C7 ACDF Thursday morning and I’m scared to death he’s gonna kill my ass. Anybody here got any soothing words ? He said he would be in and out in 35 minutes. He’s a very good surgeon but I’m nervous.

Does it matter if the bracket is screwed in straight? I've seen some doctors screw them in a little bit crooked (when looking at the xrays).

I'd assume this reduces the risk of getting whiplash or concussion.
