Epictetus was a Greek/Roman philosopher of the Hellenistic period. He managed to overcome huge obstacles in developing from a crippled Roman slave to become one of the most popular and sought after philosophers of his time. Stoicism is a school of Hellenistic philosophy founded by Zeno of Citium in Athens in the early 3rd century BC. Even though it is over 2000 years old, more and more people are discovering how Stoicism is not only relevant to modern times, but can be applied in very simple, yet strong ways.

Epictetus said “If you are tempted to look for outside approval, realize that you have compromised your own integrity. If you need a witness, be your own”.

I have been studying and implementing Stoic principles over the last 2 years and I can say with a good amount of certainty that this twenty minute video is among the very best, plain language, direct to the point, "in a nut shell, " explanations of why Epictetus and the core Stoic beliefs are so very vital to a full life. On a more personal note, I very much enjoy seeing just how the pre-Christian Stoics laid groundwork for Christianity. Moreover, You have control over your decision to judge and your perception of judgements around you, so if you must judge, try and not judge too harshly! There is no shortage of harsh and inappropriately negative judgement all around us every minute of our lives, if you learn to ignore or even lessen the impact of these harsh judgements, you will immediately feel and in fact be more fulfilled in your life journey. As for death, I ask that you continuously remind yourself and those around you that may be struggling, that yes, one morning you will NOT be waking up, yes perhaps profound, yet that simplistic, " you will NOT be waking up. All, the more reason to NO, W be awake! Because someday, "you will NOT No person can escape physical death, however you have the power to escape harsh judgement about death. Be well! MarkMannM2.com

After stoic studies i mastered my fears one of drowning so i challenged myself and swam the emerald bay one side to the other in Lake Tahoe!!! The other fear i concurred was fear of pain physical and emotional !!! Too many stories to tell with those lessons 😅... conquering your fears turns on parts of the brain and makes you grow much smarter and wisdom becomes a key to control any emotional state you face !

Too ready an acceptance of one's "fate" dulls the will. Better to plan, get educated, work, avoid needless risks, work at good health, avoid toxic people--in short, apply your will to control as much of your life as possible. THEN, accept the unpredictable. Problematic (and way too simple) to chalk up too much to luck, fate, chance, etc.

I take comfort in believing there is only one life and it is eternal. I figure why not believe in the most comforting belief if I can find as much evidence for it as any other belief or at least enough to be possible. Unfortunately for me I've had to abandon some hoped for beliefs due to an inability to find any evidence for them, like good and evil being mutually exclusive. 🙏

Any thoughts about stoicism and phobias? I don't fear death (I don't fear being dead), but my car defying the laws of physics and careening off a bridge of its own accord, yeah that scares me 😂

Great Channel! ♥️
