It’s hard to escape childhood without racking up a few scars. Why do these leftover reminders of a painful cut or crash look different from the rest of our skin? And why do they stick around for so long after the incident that caused them? Sarthak Sinha explains how scars form.

Scars can actually be quite useful. I have one on my knee that is a perfect map of the London Underground.

So if I scar my armpits will it stop sweating and growing hair? Not to sound demented, but that sounds great.

but why do some wounds seem to heal perfectly while others leave a scar?

As a plastic surgeon, one of the most frustrating issues is the difficulty in predicting how someone will scar. I can literally do the same procedure on 10 people in a week, exactly the same way, and see 4 or 5 categories of scar quality. The patients who make great scars think I'm the best surgeon in the world, those who scar less well - no so much.

No no no! The question was "Do you know how I got these scars?"

I actually kinda like scars. Sometimes I get a really bad wound and it makes me feel a little better to just think about how rad the scar is gonna look. It's like a little story of your life imprinted on you, and it's just mindblowing to me how those few seconds that an accident happens in can change the way you look for years. You can learn a lot about people from their scars.

Regarding the last sentence, I had a total knee replacement, which was unavoidable :) This is another entertaining and informative Ted Ed gem. I only wish I had seen it sooner. It helps me visualize what is going on inside my knee, and why I need to do my exercises and massage it regularly to break up the adhesions.

I have a scar on my forehead and corner of my eye from a getting knocked off my bike unconscious from a car when I was a kid. Growing up I always felt insecure about these scars until but now it doesn't bother me, I started cherishing them. I also have a scar on my stomach from I was a baby, I had Pyloric Stenosis it left a small line on the right side of my stomach. Sometimes it's hard to work out because the muscle is cut through but I work it out, these bring a lot of memories :)

I have a scar on the tip of my left index finger because earlier this year, in early October, I dropped a glass salad bowl onto a countertop and it shattered. A shard of glass cut into my finger and a few mm of skin came off, but not fully so there was a flap of skin dangling of my finger (sorry for the disgusting details). I grabbed tissues, wrapped them all around my hand and went to the hospital. Everyone was staring at me because I literally wore my school uniform, flip flops and a bloody tissue. The doctor had to move the flap of my skin because it had slightly rotated (which hurt like hell). She told me that my skin had to reattach itself (which is actually really disgusting). She put a big bandage on my finger so it literally looked like a cast for a broken finger. I could feel the blood coming out and drying inside my bandage all day. At school everyone was like "What did you do to your finger?!!!" and I told them that I cut myself with salad. I couldn't wash my left hand for the next three days. My finger print only came back after a month. I'm so talented. I could write novels with my experiences lol

I have many scars. Most are from self harming the same spot over and over before it healed when I was much younger but others are injuries. Many more are psychological

So much with medical sciences and we still haven't been able to fully understand the scars yet and someone thought that all there's to be known has already been known. I wonder how much further our generation push the frontiers.

I got one in 1st grade, it was after winter break, the janitor waxed the floor, we were playing revenge the ball landed in a corner me and this other girl Sydney Webber, and I slid to reach it, I missed and hid my had against a concrete wall, Sydney didn't even care, all she said was " I still get the ball right?" at 4:30 i was in the hospital at 10:00 I left with a concussion for 6 weeks, they said no brain activity like school work. So now I gave this now 7 YEAR bump on my head, which got me bullied by this girl who called me "Harry Potter" but the only good parts out of this was no school and I got a Hershey bar after the hospital.
