The Oni, A D&D Homebrew Race

D&D 5e homebrew for the Oni Race.

This video is so crazy. I just came up with this recently. I was also inspired by reincarnated as a slime And dungeon meshi.


Oni and teiflings

Humanoid ( with human skin tones ) and color marking on the skin
( I.E bright red stripes on the outer skin. Dots)
And sometimes cheetah like eye design.

They usually have colorful hair.

And either have two short horns coming from the top middle of the head, parting the bangs.
Directly from the forehead. A the hair line.
Or have 1 middle horn on the forehead at the hairline

Strong and magically inclined.

Are the permanent species resulting form teiflings.

Sprites (fae demons spirits yokai)
Can giant physical form once a month on the full moon.
They can choose to come tomorrow realm if they have enough power. Many due and impregnate humans and elf's often.

(There was a time in history when they happened more often)

Teiflings have colorful skin. Antennas and delicate decorative grown like horns that grow with age.
They are an image to there sprite heritage.
That happens even when the Sprite parent has no horns
as children it's just the antenna..horns grow

If a teiflings breed with tall men or elf. They will have a completely normal child.

If a teiflings has a child with another teiflings and Oni is born.

A thousand years later and the Oni are a well established race with a deep history.

Oni can breed with tall men and elves.l but will have Oni children.
Most only children only grow there horn at puberty.
They have antenna at birth that fall off.

I won't lie, I was hoping that this would provide a more history-grounded homebrew race.

Oni are often portrayed as refined and nimble in anime, which is a much more sleek reimagining of how they existed in their stories, which more closely portrayed them as ogres or trolls with some limited magic. This video seems to draw inspiration exclusively from anime oni characters than the actual yokai themselves, which isn't inherently a bad thing, but I personally find it disappointing that the actual monsters of legend have been slimmed down into conventionally attractive humans with technicolor skin and short, aesthetically pleasing horns. Oni aren't a race of hot ninjas, ya know?

Well this race has little in common with their mythological counterparts who embody all the negative aspects of humanity thus making them the natural enemy of humanity. These guys aren't Oni in the mythological sense, they just look like them.
