With so many options in Dungeons and Dragons character creation, is it any wonder the small, the spooky, and the downright weird races get overlooked? No longer! Let's talk about some underrated powerhouses in 5th edition that you can use with your builds!

I've been told to use keywords in video descriptions, but I don't know what I'm doing. I stole these tags from MonkeyDM who seems on top of this type of thing when we chat.

I have a kid in my group who wanted to play as a Grung after messing around on Hero Forge one day. He's low-key been the strongest member of the group playing a Swarmkeeper Ranger whose swarm resembles tadpoles, and he loves to make use of basically every racial feature he has, like jumping and climbing. I've been delighted at how much fun he's had with it and how distinctive a Grung can be.

As a Reborn you only get the "movespeed" like the flying speed of your previous race. That means you can wear heavy armor and still fly.

I love the idea of a paladin dhampir that smites through their fangs as they're never unarmed and can climb up walls to possibly get to ranged or flying enemies

Love that Verdan are finally getting the spotlight. It was my first race when I started playing 5e and holds a special place in my heart. They're unapologetically weird and I love everything about them.

Reminder about the Dhampir: the bite attack counts as a simple natural weapon, not an unarmed strike. Meaning, it can be a Monk weapon, and scale up its damage die with Monk levels, or the fun part: you can Smite with it. Also, I'm fairly certain it can become your Hex Weapon as a Hexblade Warlock. Enjoy!

My first group I was banned from playing Grung because they didn't like my Kermit voice, I have never been more discriminated for success

I once made a Grung Genie Warlock for one reason and one reason only. I had the inside of his Genie's Vessel just be a big ol' terrarium, that was it. I just happened to have the idea and loved it so much I ran with it.
Also I came up with a reborn character but haven't had a chance to play them as of yet. Simply put they're a bard and put the 'death' into death metal, the basic backstory idea was they woke up in a cemetry along with a couple others and started an undead band until a cleric saw them and jumped the gun with destroy undead, which only he survived, talked to and explained to the cleric (who then felt really bad about the whole misunderstanding). He is now on a journey to form a new band.

I have to admit I felt " Dirty" playing a Kalastar Barbarian, and I loved it.

I like the idea of a Verdan Hexblade with their pact Longsword hitting 5th level and the next time they summon their pact weapon, it's a Greatsword.

I had a brief opportunity to play as a Kalashtar Cleric I had made and one of the first encounters we had was with a group of Kenku. The party was on a search and rescue mission, so after fighting the Kenku, we got one to surrender, and I had the pleasure of realizing that Mind Link - by the wording of the ability - would allow me to bypass the Kenku's inability to speak outside of mimicry to have a proper conversation through telepathy. I was quite proud of myself for that one.

Glad to see Verdan here. I've built a verdan Twilight Cleric and the advantage on wis saves was great, I was pretty much guaranteed to never suck a wisdom save and recover the group from their failures, as well as helping on my charisma saves. Resilient Int was the final nail on the structure so that I was the unbreakable mental wall on my group.

Finally I see some love for the Verdan race. I made a Verdan Barbarian that lived for centuries due to plot reasons and his appearance is that of a small, old, and frail goblin, but when he rages he gets taller, stronger, and noticeably younger (example: from 80 to 40).

Thank you so much for bringing the Verdan up in your video! I've never heard of this race before but after reading up on them I officially think they have my favorite lore for a race, now I really want to play one!

You didn’t talk about it but I fell in love with shifter most recently. They used to only be able to shift once per short rest which was really situational, but now it’s tied to proficiency per long rest.
One specific interaction is the Wildhunt shifter + Barbarian, while shifted no attack within 30 feet of you can benefit from advantage; so essentially if there aren’t ranged combatants you get reckless attack with no drawbacks 👍🏼

I remember making a Verdan at some point and my DM said no since he didn't want homebrew in his campaign.... So yeah the Verdan aren't that well known

I once played a human barbarian of the beast, but as a vampire, draining bite, walking on walls, supernatural strenght. He presented himself as a bard and only used a longsword. His main weapons were his bit and coiling grasp tattoo which he used to grapple enemies at a distance and 'take a bite". He was by far my most unique barbarian given that he just looked like a pale white haired guy with black pants and a white shirt. His main focus was roleplay and intrigue which he exceeded at.

I have a dhampir druid and I love him :) we had a big fight where I went unconscious and our barbarian forced my fangs into his arm to allow me to heal back to consciousness. It was fuckin awesome!
