So fungal infection is a very common infection that affects the skin. In fact it's one of the commonest infections in a Dermatology Clinic and the private areas or the groin area is a very common area where the fungal infection starts. Many times it can spread to the other areas it can spread to the legs the stomach etc from this groin area. So what makes the fungus come in this area more commonly. One is the kind of clothes we wear so pants are tight especially around the groin area there is no circulation. So better to wear loose clothes those who get itching frequently in the groin area might have mild fungal infection. So symptoms are seen as ringworm. So this is called as ringworm in Hindi they call as “daag”, in Kannada they call "dachkarna". So it's a round circular kind of patch which is seen on the skin and it used to be called ringworm earlier because it was thought to be caused by a worm. But now we know it's a fungus which causes this infection. It can be treated with antifungals and keeping the area dry. So fungus comes in these areas because it has moisture it has heat. So moisture and heat are the two things that a fungus requires for growth and most of the time these fungi are present as pores in all surfaces. They are present everywhere outside in the dust they are present when you are drying your clothes outside or you know if somebody else in your family has an infection, it spreads to their clothes to their towels etc. So this requires a course of antifungal treatment and the dermatologist will be checking you on a monthly basis or a weekly basis to make sure that the infection is under control and once the treatment is complete they'll ask you to stop the medication . So these days fungi are more resistant to antifungals and they require sometimes long courses of antifungals, up to three to four months of treatment may be needed. So maintain good hygiene take bath every day wash your undergarments in hot water if possible if you have fungal infection. Keep the area dry by using anti-fungal powders or some normal powder. Use clothes which are loose as far as possible don't wear tight undergarment. Don't wear tight pants, wear some loose well-fitting clothes with ventilation and at home if possible wear shorts or wear a lungi or something which gives good ventilation to your private areas. So these practices will help to reduce fungal infections and always visit a dermatologist. Don't use over-the-counter creams. So many times some chemist or somebody some friends somebody will tell why don't you use many creams which the chemist will give over the counter. Most of these creams will reduce the itching immediately because they contain steroids. Steroids will only worsen the condition in the long term and by the time the patient comes to the doctor the infection would have spread all over the body. So please avoid using these creams use it only for four to five days just to give you some temporary relief. Meanwhile look for a dermatologist near you and visit them as soon as possible.
