Explore the common causes and treatments of yeast infections, which affect 3 out of every 4 people with a vagina.

--

The vagina harbors hundreds of different kinds of microorganisms. Candida yeasts are usually present in small quantities and most of the time, these fungi are harmless. But, under certain conditions, Candida yeasts can cause infections. One species in particular is the usual culprit of vaginal yeast infections. So, how exactly does a yeast infection happen? Liesbeth Demuyser investigates.

" We have been taught far more about shame than about our anatomy " hey that's so true

The opening quote hit hard. I wish more people would see this, especially those who were conditioned that our bodies are shameful and should not be talked about. Thank you, TED-Ed! ❤️

We don't know enough about the female body, full stop. I had a benign tumor growing in my abdomen that wasn't picked up on ultrasounds. For years, I told multiple doctors that I was in excruciating pain, and every single one told me it was either 1) all in my head, 2) just my hormones, or 3) a ploy to get drugs. Tumor wasn't removed until I went in for an appendix removal and the surgeon noticed it

Between this and learning about menstrual cycles, I have to say to all of us men watching this: appreciate the women in your lives. They go through issues with their bodies that we can't even imagine.

I remember as a teen my mother, sister and I all had a yeast infection at the same time! It was insane! Took a bit of detective work, but we figured out why. It was the toilet paper! Scented toilet paper had recently become popular and mom decided to buy some. Ugh! Never again!

Yeast bacteria? I've never even heard about this before in my life. This just shows how much women problems aren't talked as much as it should be. Thanks for the amazing video 👍

I love how this video addresses the stigma surrounding women's health, and how it impacts the knowledge we have of it, such good information very well transmitted!

One thing rarely mentioned but that can promote yeast growth is glycerin in personal lubricants. My wife has been infection-free since switching away from K-Y to a glycerin-free lubricant. Wish we’d known that years ago!

When I had my wisdom teeth removed, I had to take antibiotics that may have caused a perisistent yeast infection. I seriously had no knowledge on it or even knew it was this common so I was scared to tell anyone about it. Fortunately a buttload of yakult and yogurt did the trick for me to get my balance back again, but it sure would've been helpful to have known more about something this common

I’ve had so many yeast infections in my life, it’s hard to count at this point. It’s so bad I have to refrain from using undergarments over the summer. This video is amazing, and I hope in the future science will break the gender barrier.

I've had it for 12 years now. It's basically constantly there even when there are no symptoms like itching. Rarely, it gets unbearable and nerve wrecking. I've tried everything from remedies to clothing change and visiting doctors even tried manifesting it to go away and it hasn't. I just learned to accept it as it is now. I may not be able to get into relationships and that's fine. It taught me to focus on other aspects of myself.

Great discussion of a ubiquitous malady: covers physiology, value of probiotics, the inattention of the medical establishment. Great job!
