Everyone comments on Agnethas voice and it is amazing. But Anifrid had a warmth and depth to her voice and an incredible range too.

When John Lennon and Pete Townsend, completely independently, state SOS is the greatest pop song of all time.. what more can be said about ABBA

One other thing about the girls together is that their vibrato is almost identical! Agnetha, the soprano along with Frida the mezzo soprano seemingly "sharing" a singular vibrato helps make their sound very unique and iconic! I've never heard their sound duplicated yet! You hear them, you know who it is!

ABBA's song The Name Of The Game is one of the most sophisticated pop songs ever made. It's got 4 or 5 different melodies, all in less than 5 minutes. And the genius is that you don't realize this until you listen closely, because it all flows so well together. ABBA are the best melody writers of all time.

As a musician myself in the last 50 years I always appreciated the brilliant songwriting and musicianship of this group!

Being a long time bass player, I have to say, Rutger Gunnarsson is so often overlooked. He was an amazing bass player that really pulled everything together giving a bass grove that you could really dance to.

Whenever I look at Abba videos on YouTube, which is frequently, I never cease to be amazed by the sometimes vitriolic comments that follow each video, and these usually centre around Agnetha VS Annifrid. It’s stupid. They complemented each other so well, they are both so gifted, and they both offered something so important to the recipe of what made ABBA’s sound. I can’t think of another group where this is a thing in comments and was during their peak as well. I just think it’s pointless and weird and underestimates their gifts as vocalists. Your analysis is spot on. Just spot on, thank you!

I loved ABBA as a kid, considering I was just a kid when they were at their peak. But only in the last 20 years have I been afforded a different look at them and realized that ABBA were really amazing artists. Tight musicians. Beautiful vocals. Excellent writing/composing. I took it for granted back when they were big and left them behind when the 80s rolled around. But glad I can listen to them with new ears and (re)discover "new" music from a great old band.

Abba pulled off wearing spandex outfits better than any other band. The girls were beautiful and talented. The chemistry they had on stage was just fantastic.

Great analysis. I believe, that all you said, is the reason why ABBA has always been music for everybody but especially for very musical people.

Just wanted to say that in my ears Benny Andersson is one of the world's best contemporary composers. Both he and Björn Ulvaeus are writing songs not only for themselves, but for other artists. They were also behind the musical Chess with the amazing song Anthem. I have grown up with ABBA - their first album was also the very first album I ever bought. I was 11. God knows how many girls were using hairbrushes or skipping ropes as mics, pretending to be Agnetha and Anni-Frid.

I heard an interview with John Lennon from the mid 70`s, when asked if he listened to contemporary music, he said yes, and at the moment his favourite was SOS with ABBA, called it one of the most perfect popsongs ever written

Someone might have mentioned this, but all four of these individuals were quite seasoned and successful artists before they even formed ABBA. So they were already kind of a supergroup when they formed the band. Albeit locally

In the 70’s when the charts were everything in pop, you couldn’t escape Abba. They were everywhere and you couldn’t escape every song. In 2000’s my young daughters discovered ABBA Gold when it was released. My house was taken over with it all again. This could go on generation after generation. The songs are timeless; they are that good.

It's so good to hear these kind of analysis from such a great band which has trascended for so many decades.

ABBA is almost certainly the most derided, ridiculed but nonetheless supremely talented and grossly underestimated set of composers/performers there's ever been. They took their time and produced gems.
Good on

I've heard that Agnetha didn't like performing live but from what I've seen she has fantastic stage presence and of course they could both sing their asses off. Love Abba!

They were, and still are, absolute geniuses! Haven’t met an ABBA song I don’t love to pieces! Thank you for this!

I've loved Abba since I was little. My dad had the vinyl Voulez Vous. I was born in 83. I still listen to them. They are awesome, great vocals and great musicians. Listening to Abba always makes me happy 😍
