Montreal parents to 18-month-old girl both diagnosed with life-threatening illness

Less than a year ago, 39-year-old Jazz Turgeon and 35-year-old Patrick Haggart from Montreal were the happiest they’d ever been. After a challenging IVF journey, the married couple’s daughter Amelia was born.

“I was just so thrilled,” said Turgeon. “It just felt like everything we worked so hard for had finally become reality.”

However in recent months, the young parents of the 18-month-old girl have both received life-threatening news about their health. One has stage four cancer, while the other has a brain tumour that requires risky surgery.

As Global's Dan Spector reports, they’ve been heartened by an outpouring of support from the community during their darkest hours.

Bless their hearts. I wish them successful outcomes. My mother had a brain tumor removed when I was 7 (this was 1976). Her eye doctor found it. It was the size of a baseball. She had brain surgery 3 times in 1 year. They told her if she survived the first surgery, she would have to learn to walk and talk over again because of where the tumor was located. She woke up after asking for a cigarette and a cup of coffee. Luckily it wasn’t cancer and she lived until 2005. Doctors can do marvelous things.
