The #1 Cause of Hypothyroidism

The number 1 cause of hypothyroidism in the developed world is the autoimmune disease Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Hashimoto's results in destruction of the thyroid gland means you won't be able to produce thyroid hormone from your thyroid gland which means you will end up hypothyroid or with low thyroid function.

Estimates suggest that roughly 80-90% of all cases of hypothyroidism are caused by this autoimmune disease which means if you are listening to this there is a very high probability that you have this disease, whether you realize it or not.

And this is important because Hashimoto's should be treated differently than regular hypothyroidism. In Hashimoto's, you should focus primarily on targeting your immune system rather than targeting and supporting thyroid function. This is because the underlying cause of Hashimoto's stems from immune dysregulation and if you can stop this immune dysfunction you may be able to put your condition into remission.

Finally got a formal diagnosis. Unfortunately I can't get in to see an endocrinologist until July 2024. That's ridiculous!

I had hypothyroidism years before developing Hashimoto’s. I was told it may be caused by a viral infection or stress.

Hmmm...I would think Nutrient Deficiencies are at the top of the list vs Hashi!

Doctors are quick to treat the symptoms without investigating the root cause and treating that. What is the treatment for an overacting autoimmune condition?

Hi Dr. Childs. My daughter was diagnosed with Hashimoto's last year at age 10 1/2. She has been taking levothyroxine. We haven't been given any information on ways to help her immune system. Her Free T4 & T3 were still normal but her TSH was high. Is there anything that you can recommend? Thank you!

What causes parathyroid disease ? I had that for a year before my Dr figured out what was wrong. I had two parathyroid glands removed and one transplanted in my chest that was still okay. But I haven't felt good since the surgery and my Dr doesn't know why?
