Southwest Airlines to Hawaii: 8 Things to Know Before You Fly

Southwest Airlines flights to Hawaii are now bookable! I'll share with you everything YOU need to know before you fly including Southwest's initial routes to Hawaii, interisland routes, fares, and more! Southwest will be flying from San Jose, Oakland, Sacramento, and San Diego to Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island. Initial sale prices are incredible, and the other airlines that serve Hawaii are already dropping their fares to compete.

1 - Mainland Routes

Flights begin March 17
From Oakland to Oahu

Oakland-Maui: April 7

Oakland-Big Island May 12

San Jose-Oahu: May 5

San Jose-Big Island: May 12

San Jose-Maui: May 26

Expect San Diego and Sacramento service in the future. Southwest earlier announced also planned service to Kauai.

2 - Inter island flights:
launching on April 28 between Oahu and Maui.
4 flights a day

May 12 Oahu to Big Island
4 flights a day
Competing with Hawaiian.
Cheap fares still available

3- Fares:
Initial fares one way $49 on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. That's $98 round trip. Although they are all mostly sold out.

Inter island flights start at $29. Still available. Otherwise $39-59

Business Select - Priority Boarding - $624

Interisland
Anytime - Refundable - $159

Other airlines matching the price: United, Alaska, and Hawaiian for around $300 round trip.

Prices in the summer are $500+ round trip. That's June to August

4 - Seating:

Seating is still the typical Southwest style. One class, unassigned. 737 800 planes with a 32 inch pitch.

Upgraded boarding $50

5 - Luggage:
2 free bags

Surfboards cost $75 -- boogie boards count as one of the 2 free bags

No pets unless it's a service animal

6 - Food

Flight length 5.5 hours.

Southwest doesn't serve or sell meals. Eat before or bring some food. But they will have some new snacks.. what are they? We'll see!

New Drinks: Minute Maid pineapple orange juice, Blue Chair Bay coconut spiced rum and Kona Longboard Island Lager

7 - Entertainment

Wifi is $8, free TV and movies. Wifi will be available for the full duration of the flight. But no seat power. Bring a battery pack.

8 - Future

Southwest Iikes to serve “underserved” markets so they are not currently planning LA or SFO service. But they have hinted at Las Vegas.

Thanks for the info! For all you people here on the East Coast whining there is no service all you have to do is just fly to the west coast to San Diego or Oakland/ San Jose and spend a day or 2 there to break up the jet lag that way your not faced with a full long day of flying!

I still need to visit Hawaii one of these days, so it is great to see that there are multiple options for finding the best deal!

Fantastic video. I'm going to be flying Southwest to Maui in June and this video has helped me understand about how it will work. Especially with wifi. Some airlines don't have working wifi on oceanic flights. That will be just about the best 8 bucks spent in my life.

Love Southwest. I always pick between Southwest or Alaska, which are both great, as most of my travel is to California or Vegas, and those are the only two good options from PDX (won’t fly Spirit no matter how desperate I am).
